Opening Prayer - Ash Wednesday

Lord, Holy One, have mercy on us. We confess our sins to you. We have fallen short of your glory and without your mercy and grace, we would be dust. We repent now. Lord, as we enter into this Lenten season, be near to us. Help us, by your Holy Spirit, to feel right conviction and repentance for our sin. Help us, by your Spirit, to have the strength to overcome the enemy.

Thank you, Lord, that Easter is coming! Death has no sting, no victory, because of Jesus! Glory and honor and praise to His name! Thank you for rescuing us. Help us keep both the weight and the joy of this season in our hearts and we move through the next several weeks. Help us bear the good fruit of your Spirit.

Thank you that the ashes on our forehead do not symbolize our ultimate reality. From dust we might have been formed, but our bodies, our spirits, ourselves, await beautiful redemption and the restoration of all things. Help us long and look forward to that day, and let it come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Ash Wednesday & Lent

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday.

This year Ash Wednesday is on February 17. The ashes symbolize

both death and repentance.

“Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel”

“Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

What is Lent? 40 days of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus

at Easter.

Absence and Simplicity describe the season of Lent.

During Lent, there are signs of absence in our churches and liturgies.

  • Water may be removed from the holy water and baptismal fonts
  • Alleluia is not said or sung
  • Dark purple is the color used in worship.
  • Plants and Flowers may be removed from the Church

Stations of the Cross

  • Stations of the Cross - path Jesus took from being sentenced to death to his crucification to his death and being laid in the tomb
  • Practice started because people were not able to visit the holy land in person. This gave Catholics another way to better understand Jesus’ journey.
  • The 14 Stations of the Cross represent events from Jesus’ passion and death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ suffering, Death, and Resurrection.

Holy Week

  • Palm Sunday - Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphant entrance of Christ

into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. Palms are blessed and distributed at all masses on Palm Sunday.

Easter Sunday

Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s rising from the dead (Resurrection).

Jesus was arrested, tried, and found guilty of claiming to be a king. His body was hung on a cross between two thieves. After his death, Jesus’ body was wrapped in linen cloths and placed in a tomb with a large stone rolled across the opening. On the third day, an early Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and another Mary came to the tomb and found it empty. Sitting on the rolled away stone was an angel of the Lord who told them to not be afraid because Jesus had risen. As the women left to tell the disciples, Jesus Christ met them and showed them his nail-pierced hands.

Because of Jesus dying and rising, we believe that we have the hope of a new life (an everlasting life in Heaven) after our earthly death.

How can you prepare for Jesus’ Resurrection?

  1. Prayer - spend extra time talking with God
  2. Fasting* - going without food or eating less than you normally do
  3. Almsgiving- doing good for others (gifts, money, or to help others)

*Fasting is not required on Ash Wednesday or

Good Friday for those less than 21 years old or

older than 58. Catholics are not supposed to eat

meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday or Fridays

in Lent. Fasting means consuming only one full meal

a day; two smaller meals that don't together add up to

a full meal also are allowed.
