Remote sensing can help fight coronaviruses. Satellite images cannot directly help fight the disease, but they can help authorities take action to prevent the spread of the virus. "With this type of technology, it is possible to monitor the movement, what is happening in the terrain observed, and thus know if the new rules of social interaction are being respected", explains Leonardo Barros, executive director of Hex, a geospatial technology company that helped the PF reach the suspect in the oil spill that hit the country's coastline in 2019.

Precise geolocation of data (geoprocessing), such as the incidence of new ones infected by the virus, points out on the maps the “hot spots” – points that show the intensity of the occurrence's incidence and the propagation trend. And then, from the association of satellite images to these maps, it is possible to verify the conditions of access, logistics, quickly, being important information to guide decision-making.

Have you ever thought that it would someday be possible to use 3D printing in regenerative medicine? In Situ Celular Therapy not only believed in this idea, it is also developing bio-dressings with stem cells, produced from a 3D bioprinter, to treat chronic wounds and severe burns. With the new coronavirus pandemic, the startup slowed down its activities and became an important testing center in Ribeirão Preto. This is yet another of the companies participating in the acceleration phase and awarded the Women Innovators Program award, from Finep.

The objective of using this technique is to improve the quality of life of patients refractory to conventional therapies. Different from a medicine, the cell – present in the biodressing – perceives the environment of the injury and acts according to what the body needs. This gives the product a therapeutic capacity much more efficient than the options available on the market today, being considered an intelligent treatment. With its use, the trend is that wounds heal more efficiently, reducing complications and reducing costs for both the patient and the health system as a whole.

To obtain the dressings, the company uses the technology of a 3D bioprinter manufactured by another Brazilian startup. With 100% national production, In Situ biodressings are being developed on an experimental basis, with very promising in vitro results. At the moment, the company is awaiting approval from Anvisa to start clinical trials.

The startup was born from the studies of Carolina Caliari, biologist, master and doctor in the field of Immunology. Despite initially planning to pursue an academic career, the biologist found in a grant from the PIPE-Fapesp program the chance she needed to make the project leave the doors of the university and become a product for those who really need it. “Brazil is very rich in science, but that bridge is missing: what is produced at the university to reach people who need it. That's what we're trying to accomplish”, pointed out Carolina.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, the start of clinical trials scheduled by the company had to wait. However, in order not to be stuck, they got involved in an initiative of Supera Parque, in Ribeirão Preto, where, together with other startups, they made their laboratory, equipment and know-how available to test the new coronavirus in the city. As a result, they became the city's official testing center. So far, they have carried out more than 35,000 tests, contributing to Ribeirão Preto becoming one of the most tested cities in Brazil. “Despite not being our focus, we went back to the laboratory bench, put on the scientist's coat and helped with science and technology”, reported the biologist.
