Sometimes experimental films get so caught up in trying to be clever that they lose their way. This film, while short, has a clear purpose and is quite compelling in its simplicity. While the modern audience might not fully appreciate this work, for the original viewers, this film must have been thrilling, perhaps even frightening. Additionally, when one considers the influence this film has had on the entire industry, it becomes even more impressive. You would be hard pressed to find any movie that was not influenced in some manner by this one.

The Review

On paper, this movie should have been not just a box office smash, but a critical sensation. In actuality, it was neither, although it did barely make back its immense, insane budget. Starring a multimedia superstar, a comedy stalwart, and buoyed by an embarrassment of riches of genre actors in supporting roles, this film had the makings of being a slam dunk. The director had previously had massive success, both critically and financially, in adapting decades-old series and modernizing them for the big screen, and hired folks behind the camera with whom he’d had years of experience. The action set pieces are big and bombastic. But the film never comes together to form a cohesive whole. The two leads have little comedic chemistry, their repartee is stunted, which isn’t helped by the woeful script. A major disappointment any way you look at it.

This movie constantly does something that seems sort of interesting, and then it dives right back into ridiculous “what the bus?” territory, half of the actors feel like they are in different movies with a completely different tone. Every time this movie seems like it might get better it goes back to crude jokes, but then a few minutes later it gets a genuine laugh. just baffling

Reshoots appear to have been done about 40 years after the fact. They reuse the same footage several times throughout the film. The absolutely insane animatronics. This movie is an absolute masterpiece. Why was there a concert in the middle of the movie? Who are these acts? So many shots in this movie seem to have been used purely because they filmed them. Do they forward the plot? Do they matter at all? Who cares, it pads the run time!

Grizzly II: Revenge (1983/2020)

AVERAGE SCORE: 27

When a grizzly loses her family, she seeks revenge on anyone who wanders into her woods -- including the concert that's setting up nearby.

Sometimes a movie can survive a no-name director, a producer who leaves on day one of the shooting with all of the production’s money only to end up in jail for a “non-related business transaction”, a forfeiture of its production equipment and props (including bear animatronics) by the Hungarian government, being shelved for four decades and then finished with freeware assets and Youtube sound effects FOUR DECADES LATER, and sometimes it’s Grizzly II: The Revenge.

The film was extremely visually appealing. Nearly every shot made me think "neat" either because of some particularly nice choices of framing, or because another actor I didn't know was in the movie had appeared. But beyond that, the film falls flat. The script has a number of entertaining lines, and more than a few high-brow jokes, but none of them were memorable. Overall, the storyline leaves a lot to be desired.

This movie will leave you asking “who's fairytale is it anyway?” As it tries to put a twist on a familiar story. But that comes with strings attached. Just putting the same building blocks together again doesn’t magically turn it into something fresh. The wooden singing could have used some polish and the lackluster lyrics could have used more time in the workshop. Starlight occasionally shines on a fun one-liner, campy performance, or colorful dance number which keeps the movie from being a complete chore.

Not to be confused with the similarly titled 2005 movie by the same producer, the unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four was a masterclass of rushed production on a shoestring budget to save character rights before they expire.

As Stan Lee said “That movie was never supposed to be shown to anybody.”

Oops.

The Review

This is a fever dream of a movie. This is an acid trip of a movie. This is an asset flip of a movie. Can a CGI production be riddled with what looks for all the world like bad green-screen effects? You bet it can! This is a Computer Animation final project that was left to the last minute. To call the performances phoned in is an insult to phones. Between the visuals and the gross (both meanings) amounts of branding, it belongs squarely in the 1990s. What was envisioned as Looney-Toons style stretch-and-squish was replaced with motion capture and the result is just... non-stop flailing, from all characters, all the time, captured by a hypercaffeinated camera. I would bet money no storyboards were made for this not-film, this Series of Things Happening. It doesn’t know who its target audience is. It SEEMS aimed at children, but the story is incomprehensible, the premise is naff, and the whole thing is FAR too horny for its own good. To sum up, one person produced, directed, wrote, and voiced in a key role for this thing, and that person was the CEO of the animation company. That should tell you a lot.

This movie is what you get when a new animation studio thinks: “We could do a Pixar,” and then they got their hands on a script with as much creativity as the Emoji Movie. And honestly I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. There were so many fun mistakes. The characters either move too much, or not at all. The music was often hilariously jarring. And the lines were full of cliches. Unfortunately, not all of its failings make the film more entertaining. Some stereotype jokes have gotten only more uncomfortable. There were a lot of gross innuendos, especially for a PG movie. And the puns! There were way too many of them, and very few got even as much as a chuckle out of me.

The Review

Is it a criminal conspiracy if a man invites himself to your company in a way that you'd have to be rude to get him to leave you alone, then similarly extorts you for conversation, then to solve the marital troubles he's dredged out of you decides he should kill your wife, and then does it? The characters in this movie seem to think so. From there follows a rapid dance of manipulation and deception and despair as the hero struggles more or less alone against police suspicion and a villain who seems to have everyone fooled, culminating in an almost hallucinatory frenzy of professional ball games, stressful train rides and a frantic chase taking place on a merry-go-round. The moral seems to be: if a smiling psychopath cheerfully murders your family and tries to ruin your life with shameless lies, you shouldn't be afraid to tell the truth.

The Review

It's a kids film alright, but boy do I feel sorry for the kids and especially parents who were forced to watch this simplistic drivel. Good children's media has some themes or some subtext which will make it watchable by parents while still understanding it's catered towards kids. This movie is not that. This feels like a cheap cash grab trying to cash in on the popularity of superhero movies. The movie is simultaneously too scary for toddlers and talking down to anyone older. The only reason to watch this is on mute if you like dogs and do not have access to a dog, because interaction with any pet for the hour and a half of this movie's duration would be far more stimulating for people of any age. Also one of the characters entire personality was calling the others dude or dudette and it was very grating on top of an already miserable experience.

Remember that movie about the dog who was kind of OK at basketball, and then it was kind of OK at Football, soccer, baseball and volleyball? And then his puppies went snowboarding and to space and hang out with Santa in the North Pole and then ghost hunting and in search of pirate treasure?

In this one they’re superheroes.

This movie was apparently so good, it concluded director’s Robert Vince 14 movie vision… At least as it relates to talking dogs related to Buddy.

There’s a 4 movie series about Dogs who do American Idol, there’s a TV show where dogs go to school to learn how to be dogs and Netflix made a series a couples of years ago about ghost puppies who want to be real dogs!

I’m low-key obsessed with the Talking Dogs Cinematic Universe…

A very harrowing tale, one that tells the cycle of life and death. Our protagonists shuffling along the cold harsh lands is a stark reminder of how precious life is. I feel for our tuxedo friends, as they huddled together for survival for such long periods. But it's all worth it in the end. A great and educational story, one that brought me tears and thus, I am not willing to revisit it any time soon.
