  • All students must earn 75 hours of community service before they graduate.

  • FCPS has many of these hours infused into the essential curriculum. Students can earn 4.5 hours in courses such as Algebra I, American Studies II, Biology, English 9, 10, 11, Geometry, Government, Stats & Prob, Modern World History

Earning Credits

  • High school is very different from middle school

  • Grades and attendance do matter.

  • If you fail a class, you will be rescheduled for that class until you earn a passing grade.

  • Students must earn credits in order to be promoted into the next grade- -
    • 10th Grade Status = 6 credits
    • 11th Grade Status = 12 credits
    • 12th Grade Status = 18 credits

Academic Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities

  • Based on your Term 1, Semester 1, Term 3, and Semester 2 grades
  • Virtual School and Summer School classes are included in 2nd semester grades.

  • Minimum 2.00 GPA and no “F” or WF” grades

  • Students with a grade of “incomplete” are ineligible until the grade has been changed and eligibility status verified

  • Semester 2 grades determine eligibility for the following fall

How can parents support their student?

  • Encourage students to use FLEX time wisely - must remain in FLEX if have a D or F in class

  • Monitor your student’s grades/assignments on Schoology.
    • All parents/guardians have an access code that is linked to their child's account.

  • Encourage your child to get involved in extracurricular activities at the school, whether it’s a sport, band, theatre or a club.

PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers. The program’ s courses engage students in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers.

  • CTC presented to THS students on September 27th about their programs / Shadow process / Application process

  • Students must arrange to shadow their program choice (up to 2) prior to submitting an application

  • Shadowing runs from November 7 - February 29.

  • CTC Open House - October 26th

  • After the shadow experience, if a student wishes to apply, they complete the application online. Applications to apply open in November and are due in early March 2024.

  • Most CTC programs are proposed to be for two years but CTC may accept students interested in attending just for their senior year if space is available.

  • If accepted into the program, their schedule will be adjusted to ½ day academic at THS and ½ day program at CTC. Transportation will be provided to and from CTC.

Academy for the Fine Arts

  • Choose a path that fits your schedule: The AFA can be customized as a one, two, or three year program. Students decide when to audition for the Academy based on their specific scheduling needs. Each track contains a different set of experiences.

  • Five programs of studies:
    • Dance
    • Music
    • Theater
    • Visual Arts
    • Musical Theatre

  • AFA Scholarship each year, the AFA awards four seniors a scholarship to the institution of their choice.

The Academy for the Fine Arts will be holding an Open House and Information Session on Thursday October 12th from 6:30pm-8:00pm at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

This event is open to FCPS High School parents and students who wish to learn more about the college and career pathway program in the visual and performing arts. The Academy for the Fine Arts currently offers focus areas for students in grades 10-12 in:
