Goals

  • Produce and publish high quality metadata about art exhibitions and objects, based on text mining and graph analysis, through reconciliation of the objects, people and events;

  • Demonstrate the value of the extracted and combined knowledge in terms of new understandings of transmission of artistic styles, trends in international, institutional collaborations, and the changing reactions of audiences over time to artworks;

  • Produce and publish well-documented, usable toolchains and process descriptions for the extraction and reconciliation of exhibition information for other institutions to replicate the results with their own data;

9

10 of 26

Goals

  • Research and demonstrate the extent to which relevant textual sources, from newspaper archives to social media at contemporary exhibitions, can be used to directly enrich descriptions of exhibitions, with a focus on identifying the exhibited objects, via exhibitions at partner institutions;
  • Examine the extent to which image content from social media and computer vision techniques can be used to identify exhibited objects, and link those objects to more detailed metadata;
  • Experiment with the tools and subsequent analysis techniques at the forthcoming Knossos: Looking for the Labyrinth exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum and thereby encourage visitor engagement;
  • Demonstrate a paradigm of connected art historical knowledge being used to further research and user engagement.
