The Problem: Vision Fails When It Matters Most

Emergency Scenarios

🔥 Building fires with smoke

🌫️ Search & rescue in fog

🌡️ Thermal imaging at night

Drone-based victim detection

The Challenge

Current VLMs are trained on clean images

But emergencies have:

• Obscured visibility

• Non-standard imagery (thermal)

• Life-critical decisions

• Uncertainty: "might be", "could be"

Finding 1: Models Become Cautious

In degraded conditions:

• Less fabrication (0.81 → 0.46)

• More uncertainty phrases

• VLMs "know they don't know"

Finding 2: Color Hallucination Persists

Thermal images have NO natural colors

Yet models mention 2.25 colors/response

"red shirt" in purple heat map = hallucination

2

Analysis of iterative language feedback for error correction in degraded imagery

3

Conclusion

Degradation breaks spatial grounding (especially thermal)

Language feedback can partially recover lost performance

Cropping strategies must be condition-aware

Hallucination metrics must account for image modality
