Google Surveys/Forms

Google Surveys and Forms have a wide range of uses. They can be used for pre-assessments, formative tasks as well as summative quizzes.

For some children, getting through the door in the morning might be the feat of the day -wouldn’t it be great to check in real quick to see who was struggling.

A google form can be used as a book review tool. Students can share questions and opinions of the stories they’ve read. Teachers can evaluate the book choices, summaries and critical thinking in student responses. This would also be a great way for students to track their own reading, building their own reading portfolios.

Google forms can also be used as Exit passes or as summative quizzes. The response spreadsheet can be auto-marked by using a couple of add-ons or if you conditionally format the cells. The above link is a Science quiz one of Halton’s teachers published (thanks Mr. Frost…)

Google Sites

Google sites is an ideal way for students to creatively and securely create portfolios of their learning. They have the opportunity to customize the look and format, while easily updating the content. The sites could easily grow from year to year, archiving content and building a great repository of material to reflect upon.

Youtube is a great video tool that could be used instead of oral presentations. Posting student led tutorials would also lend itself well to assessment of learning and communication of ideas.

ThingLink

Thinglink is a great interactive tool that allows students to make an image interactive. Students can attach images, text or video to their selected image with stickers.

UJam is a unique Google App that allows students to record their voice or their instrumental playing and then edit the track to add background rhythms, instruments and themes. UJam would be a great tool to use to evaluate music abilities, written and spoken language as well as composition (think slam poetry!!)

Blogger

Using a blog for students to reflect, report or share their thinking would be a great tool to use for assessment and evaluation of learning. As well, it provides students with an authentic audience and purpose.
