What is Sales Tax? Why do I have to pay it at the Book Fair?

Sales tax is an additional fee (charged by state and local governments) added to the cost of certain goods. In Texas, there is an 8.25% sales tax. To figure out how much the sales tax will be added to an time at the Book Fair:

  1. multiply the sales tax to the cost of the item, and
  2. then add that amount to the cost of item.

For example: If the cost of a book at the book fair was $17.99.

17.99 x .0825 = 1.48

$17.99 + $1.48 = $19.47 (total cost of the book with sales tax included)
