  • Working build July 11-15. Working on electrical and etc.
  • Trying to get an inspector out then to get their take on OSE build
    • Marcin is working out the breaker box now. 100 A panel. Combination washer/dryer, non-vented (condensing), uses 120VAC instead of 240VAC. LG 4.5 cu ft Washer Dryer Combo WM3998HBA - Open Source Ecology

Task Notes

  • Modular breakdown of Master CAD
  • Wall modules again - need to update for mods since last year
    • In production, minimal screws, then nail it off per code requirement
    • Pros likely want to nail gun it, but amateurs may want screws for reworkability
    • Jigs! (story stick)
    • Still using bead board
    • Initial inspection, then a second rough-in inspection - all framing, plumbing, wiring exposed
      • No electrical for first inspection, so no insulation
      • Housewrap the whole house, then do rough-in inspection
      • Bathtub needs to be in for rough-in, so interior sheathing around tub is required.
    • Sear Kit House BOMs had ~30k parts
  • Need to make file types 1, 2, and 3 for the wall modules

Process

  • FreeCAD v16
  • Download master CAD from GitLab
  • Need to be able to replicate building a wall module in FreeCAD
    • Get into correct orientation plane
    • Draw out a sketch, then pad it
    • Rename it “Wall Module 1” or whatever
    • Copy module into new FreeCAD doc.
    • Upload module to wiki (upload for testing purposes)

Framing Components Notes

  • 9’ pre-cut stud is 104-⅝” long
  • 10’ OSB sheathing actual width: 47-7/8 (+/- 1/32) inch, actual length: 119-7/8 (+/- 1/16") inch
  • 9’ OSB sheathing actual width: 47-7/8 (+/- 1/32) inch, actual length: 107-7/8 (+/- 1/16") inch
  • Bead board actual dimensions: 4’ x 8’

2nd Floor Wall Modules

  • Update them to use 9’ pre-cut studs
    • Currently, they use 8’ pre-cut studs for a total module height of 95.625” (8’ pre-cut stud + 2 x 1.5” ends)
    • Make them the same as 1st floor modules, except channel height shrinks to 13.125" - 1.5" = 11.625”, since the 2nd floor doesn’t have the sill plate.
    • OSB gap between 1st and 2nd floors. Should the 2nd floor OSB be extended to butt against 1st floor OSB, or should it just extend ~¾” for aligning module to subfloor?
      • Using 4’x9’ pre-cut OSB sheets? No, see explanation on p. 11

Verification

  • You should end up with ⅜” under 9 feet for the module.
  • Studs should be 9’ precut (104-⅝”)
  • New module, when merged into CAD, should stick out 12” higher
  • Wall module should align with rest of walls.

Emails with Marcin

  • After complete sketches, do the final Dumb Object (the 4x9 foot module as one piece). We can save the individual parts file for BOM purposes later - first is the dumb file so we can ship the full CAD to a structural engineer.�
  • My question about using 4’x9’ OSB panels or something else
  • Marcin response:

    • 4x9 sheets - not good as it doesn't allow us to tie in to the second floor joists for structural purposes.
    • We save about $750 in OSB if we use 4x8 sheets, but we would have to add upper blocking for the OSB.
    • Extra labor to add blocking is not too bad, and we can typically use scrap lumber for the blocking.
    • Bottom Line: it makes economic sense to use 2.5 sheets of 4x8 OSB instead of 2 sheets of 10' OSB. So let's go with 8'. Plus, Home Depot doesn't appear to even have 10' OSB, so 10' and 9' are out. that's good, as that simplifies sourcing.
    • Here is the logic for OSB - which is a small update for the production house:
      • 1. Make first floor OSB even with bottom plate, ie, it hangs down 1.5" below the wall module. Current CAD (electrical_64) appears to show this already
      • 2. This determines location of blocking.
      • 3. Let's go to 2x4 blocking, not 2x2. Experience shows these can crack, not as solid as 2x4. Let's make a rule that blocking is 2x4 from here - this means you have to modify your module.
      • 4. After we go up 10 feet (2' strip of OSB is cut) - see where we end up. Current CAD shows about 2.5" gap in OSB to the second floor OSB. Hang 2nd floor OSB also 1.5" below the module - so we can tie into 1st floor with the OSB sheathing. There would be a small gap of 1" - which is perfect for tolerance.

Wall Module 26 - 2nd floor door

  • Not sure how to proceed with extending the door to 9’
  • Planning to replicate design of Wall Module 9, which uses a cripple stud and jack studs instead of blocking.
  • Opening widths differ: 38.5” vs 39”. Which is correct for 2nd floor?
    • Looks ike 38.25” from below (source)
  • Opening heights also differ. 82.13” (mod 26) vs. 79” (mod 9). Correct height?

Running Coderjeff’s SH2 Panels Workbench

  • FreeCAD 16 - installed the workbench from SH2 Panel Workbench - Open Source Ecology
  • Workbench is barebones, but functional
    • The three ‘X’ icons in red creates a different wall module. Left to right: Create a new 8ft Exterior Panel, Create a new 8ft Interior Panel, and Create a new 9ft Exterior Panel�

  • The modules don’t have the staggered OSB, and they don’t have the correct blocking locations.
  • Updating the python file in the workbench would be easy enough but a little clunky to cover the different wall styles.
  • The modules get built at (X,Y,Z) = (0,0,0) and rotation (0,0,1), which could be updated to build each module at the correct location in the full house.

    • Open module file type 3 in FreeCAD
    • Collapse module into one part (Make a Compound)
    • Drawing Dimensioning is the workbench
      • Compound should be Active Part.
      • Click on A3 to insert new drawing
      • Click on button left of A3 (Shortcut to Drawing-OrthoViews Command)
      • Secondary side view: check box to right of center (gray) box
      • Add dimensions by selecting points
    • Upload to wiki under 3D CAD Exterior Walls gallery
