CSU/UC Applications

  • 23 CSU ($70 each) & 9 UC ($80 each) campuses; 1 application per system!
  • Systems vary in mission and program perspective (theory vs. practice)
  • Application filing period: Oct 1-Nov 30th, UC application open now (do NOT wait until Nov 29 at 11:59 PM!)
  • No letters of rec, no transcripts (yet), no essay/personal statement
  • Personal, appropriate email address/College Portal check regularly for verifications
  • Decisions released in March (some CSU rolling based on date submitted)
  • Deadline to SIR: May 1st

CSU Applications:

October 1 – Nov 30

  • Fall 2025: do not consider SAT/ACT scores for admissions

  • Minimum GPA increased to 2.5 in A-G courses. 2.0-2.49 GPA considered using the following info requested on the application:

Number of courses exceeding minimum “a-g" requirements, work experience, household income, extracurricular involvement, and

other available information that would inform the campus admission decision. Check each CSU website as they are required to post admissions criteria for all impacted programs

Eligibility Index: For CSULB

(College Preparatory Grade Point Average* X 200) + (500 x HS Math Subject GPA) + (500 x HS English GPA).

Requirements:

  • Graduate from an ESUHSD school, meet Nov 30 and all other deadlines
  • Earn “C-” and higher in required A-G courses
  • GPA: 2.75/A-G courses for guaranteed admissions to SJSU (NOT specific major)
    • Don’t meet GPA requirement? Can still apply but NOT guaranteed

  • ALL majors are IMPACTED at SJSU: EI Calculation = 800 points x A-G Coursework GPA
      • Extra points: first-generation, eligible for free/reduced lunch, live in SJ
      • Separate EI for College of Engineering: 400 points x Math GPA
  • If you meet the “Eligibility Index” for intended major, you will be given a spot. If not, you will be admitted as “Undeclared”.

UC Applications

(open now, submit Oct 1- Nov 30)

  • Academic History: Graduation Inventory Student Access - Google Docs
    • Report all coursework accurately (EVHS, prior high schools, Math Enrichment, UC Scout, EVC, DeAnza, Jose Valdes, Silicon Valley, etc.)
    • List all college coursework under “Colleges I attended”
  • Activities/Awards: Clear, concise, NO acronyms
    • 350 character limit, don’t need to fill. Space for description if not obvious. Quality over quantity (ex: Swim Team Captain - no explanation required). Working/ caring for family counts!
  • Personal Insight Questions(Choose 4 out of 8)
    • Not a creative writing piece/essay; focus on content not structure; no quotes
    • Relate to choice of major/career or activity/award; influenced who you are today; personal quality/trait that betters your community/share factors outside of school that have enhanced/impeded opportunities
  • Additional Comments Section: Take advantage!!
    • AP class full? Cap on number of classes? Family illness? Conflict in schedule? Medical issue? Low grade?

Applications Due: Oct through Jan

  • 77 Independent Colleges in CA, 1000+ outside CA
  • Privately supported
  • Vary in size, specializations, locations, programs
  • Higher costs, but potential for more financial aid
  • Possible religious affiliation, but this does not limit enrollment

Students in Western states may enroll in participating 2-year and 4-year public college programs at a reduced tuition level ( pay less than nonresident tuition!)

Private Colleges

    • Teacher Rec/Counselor reports must be requested directly through Common Application 1000+ colleges accept Common App: If your college uses it, you need to. Avoid Coalition/direct submission if possible (required for MIT and Georgetown)
    • No, you do not have a class rank
    • Yes, you need to waive FERPA
    • Supplemental essay questions/additional requirements: check each college/program
    • Early Action (Non-Binding): No commitment if admitted. Can apply to multiple colleges as EA. Oct/Nov deadline.
    • Early Decision (Binding): Can only apply to 1 college as ED. Must withdraw all other applications if admitted. Parent/student sign. Oct deadline.
    • ADD COUNSELOR EMAIL ASAP FOR EA/ED, BY EARLY NOV FOR ALL OTHERS. YOU can submit at any time up until deadline, counselors do NOT work during holidays.

TRANSCRIPTS

  • CSU/UC: Do NOT require at time of application. ONLY request IF CSU/UC REQUESTS BY EMAIL/STUDENT PORTAL. Use Parchment (on EVHS website) to request. Final transcript will be submitted by EVHS in June after 2nd semester grades are posted (more info in spring). If you took a class anywhere outside EVHS, YOU are responsible for submitting official transcript/s by the end of June - ONLY to the 1 CSU/UC you’ve chosen to attend, even if the class is on your EVHS transcript
  • COMMON APP: Counselors submit transcripts to all Common App schools in Fall (Secondary School Report) and Jan (Mid-Year Report). You do not need to ask or remind us :) If you took a class anywhere outside of EVHS, YOU are responsible for submitting official transcript/s at time of application to ALL colleges, even if the class is on your EVHS transcript
  • COALITION/MIT/colleges that only use their own system: Enter counselor email address - system will send auto link for us to submit your docs. You are responsible for submitting outside transcripts

Letters of Recommendation �(PRIVATE COLLEGE ONLY)

  • Most require 1-2 letters of rec from academic teachers

  • Counselors submit Secondary School & Mid Year Reports/Academic Info (includes explanation of why counselors at large high schools do not write letters; does not impact you negatively)

  • Start asking NOW – teachers max out /provide a resume

  • Request by entering email addresses (check spelling)

  • Other/3rd Recommender: mentor, coach, college professor, supervisor, club advisor. No middle school teachers, no relatives

SAT/ACT Exams

  • UC/CSU: Not used for admission. May consider scores for course placement after enrollment

  • Private Colleges: Varies by campus, some are test-blind/some test-optional/some request scores. Do your research.

  • Need to send directly from College Board website

  • Not needed for community college, may use for placement

Application - Fee Waivers

  • Do you qualify? You need to have used a fee waiver on a previous SAT. Info on CollegeBoard
  • 4 CSU/4 UC max. Must complete income and family size information on app to be considered. No external code, automatically applied.
  • Common App, no max, determined by each college. Do not enter credit card info. Must include income and family size on application.
  • Concerns? You will be emailed. Check email/SPAM regularly.
  • Financial aid does not begin until August. Put aside approx. $1000 for deposits, housing application, initial fees, etc.

Community College: Mar – Apr

  • Admission: 18+ and/or graduated HS
  • Free app & free to all CA residents for 1-2 years - yay!
  • AA/2-year degrees, transfer programs (TAG) to all CSU/UC
  • No high school records used in transfer process - fresh start
  • Vocational programs/certificates - make sure to check the college offers what you want to study
  • 109 colleges in CA
  • DeAnza & EVC enroll at EVHS in spring - dates TBA …

Vocational Options

  • Opportunities for students seeking work training/technical experience
  • + Industry contacts, quick start, hands-on, state certifications, internships, union membership upon completion, 1-2 years (ex. SVCTE)
  • Can be expensive - financial aid may be available (many community colleges offer similar programs for a fraction of the cost), 2+ years

  • Serve your country in one of five main branches of service
  • Learn a job skill while you serve
  • Training available in over 4000 occupations
  • Save for college or attend college programs as part of your service

Financial Aid

FAFSA-Free application for Federal Student Aid- New Version opens in December, priority deadline March 2nd.

Be Prepared: FAFSA Worksheet

Both student and one parent must sign the FAFSA electronically with an FSA ID

Types of Aid:

No Repayment: Cal Grant (District submits GPA, no separate application), Grants, Scholarships, Work Study. Private schools offer additional merit-based aid if you do not qualify for need-based aid

Loans: must be repaid

CSS Profile: CSS Profile is an online application used by some private colleges and some scholarship programs to award institutional (their own) aid.

CADAA- California Dream Act Application

Who can apply: Eligibility Handout

Types of Aid: many financial aid opportunities for undocumented/Dreamer students including: Cal Grant, Chafee Grant, Middle Class Scholarship, UC Grants, State University Grants, California College Promise Grant (CCPG), EOP/EOPS, some University/private scholarships administered by campuses

Have a Successful Year!

  • So, so, so important to maintain grades ALLLLLL year
    • All admissions are conditional upon receipt of final grades in June. Expectation: maintain approx same grades as 9th-11th. NO D’s/F’s!
    • NO summer school after senior year to fix grades
    • Each year many offers rescinded because 1) failure to maintain grades, and 2) missed deadlines
    • Work hard so this is not YOUR sad story…..
    • Spring semester: what to do if you earn D’s/F’s in Fall, waitlists, community college. Check email regularly for announcements
