The Solana Global Hackathon is a treasure trove of know-how

The Solana Global Hackathon is optimised to form full-time Solana ecosystem founders.

8

While it is important to increase the total number of developers, we consider it more important to increase the number of full-time Solana ecosystem founders. As more start-ups launch, competition is likely to lead to a better product experience for end-users and a leap forward in turning the world on-chain.

Place

The Global Hackathon will always be online, not IRL. It provides a level playing field for builders from all over the world to compete and demonstrate their potential to build impactful crypto start-ups.

Term

The Global Hackathon is five weeks long, giving teams enough time to complete a full engineering sprint to reach the Solana devnet. Projects are also judged solely on the work completed during the hackathon, but participants can start building two months before the start date.

Bounty

Builders need to bring their own creative product ideas that they envisage working on in the next decade.

Judging

In keeping with the goal of increasing the number of start-ups in the ecosystem, an award is given to a team that tries to build full-time and develop a product with a potentially viable business model.

Who will participate?

There are three main targets for global hackathons: learners, contributors and founders. This document targets the 'founders'.

12

Learner

Developers who participate in hackathons to learn and experiment with blockchain technology.

Contrubutor

Developers who do not intend to become startup founders, but build useful tools to add to their CV and seek adoption by current ecosystem companies.

Founder

Ambitious developers and founding teams who use hackathons as engineering and business sprints to launch new start-ups.

  1. The Colosseum Hackathon is aimed at new projects that are not externally funded.
  2. Projects cannot begin development more than two months prior to the start of the Colosseum Hackathon.
  3. Projects will only be judged on the basis of code and work produced between the start and end dates of the hackathon

Accelerator details

The Colosseum accelerator is a six-week online programme specifically designed to embed hackathon winners in the Solana ecosystem, get them into the product market quickly and raise seed funding quickly.

25

  1. To be part of the programme, a person must participate in a global hackathon and be selected as the winner.
  2. Access to a closed founder community, one-to-one mentorship and weekly educational sessions.
  3. Colosseum invests USDC 250 000 in all start-ups on friendly terms.
  4. Founders have access to a dedicated section of the platform provided by Colosseum. This section includes private discussions with ecosystem founders, a knowledge base of content relevant to building a crypto start-up and a directory of investor ratings and connections.

WHY SOLANA? (Only Possible on Solana)

29

Build with mass adoption in mind

The community has strong cohesion

Towards mass adoption, we are trying to go beyond Web2 UI/UX by thoroughly pursuing 'cheap and fast'.

Conversely, Solana may not fit if there are almost no transactions or if the use case is closed to the enterprise only.

Ecosystems and users are more cohesive and can start with a strong footing.

Example of common standards created.

  • Compressed NFT is a collaboration between Solana Foundation/Labs and Metaplex.
  • Blinks is a collaboration between Solana Foundation/Anza, Dialect, Backpack, Phantom and hackathon participants

Best Practices for Consideration

30

  1. Choose an area of knowledge and strength
    • In-depth knowledge and insight is required, so areas of experience are recommended wherever possible.
  2. Select areas of high user interest and concern as industry trends
    • For example, if it were NFT Marketplace or DePIN, which would be of more interest to users and judges?
  3. Making cool products
    • Legacy products such as the NFT Marketplace and the NFT Mint website should not be created.
    • Even if a product resembles one made previously, there is absolutely no problem if there is a clear path to success.
  4. Create rather than use (create, make, build)
    • Due to the popularity of Blinks, it's common to see a lot of time spent on implementing Blinks. However, the important thing is not to use them, but to create them. "Using" has a low barrier to entry and there are increasing alternatives available, so you should not spend too much time there.
  5. Wow
    • Giving the judges big surprises and discoveries they had never known before

  • Focus on English
    • Please ensure all communications and documentation are in English. This is necessary because the judges are international, and information not in English will not be understood.
    • (Hypothetical) If the excitement is only in Japan, it is seen as just making noise locally.

Trends Among Top 1-2 Finishers

31

  • The top 1-2 positions in each track are approved for the accelerator (therefore, aim primarily for the 1-2 positions as benchmarks).
  • The 1st and 2nd place winners most frequently reach Stage 2 (User Needs Validation).
    • The probability of reaching 1st or 2nd place during Stage 1(Generating) is 15%.
    • The probability of reaching 1st or 2nd place during Stage 2(User Needs validation) is 77%
  • Top 1-2 finishers differ from 3-5 place and special award winners in plan quality and stage
    • The 1st and 2nd place winners clearly have higher quality business plans, are further advanced in stage, possess greater technical skills, and appear to be well-versed in Solana. However, we believe that it is not so much that we cannot win. On the other hand, the level of Grand Champion is quite high and it is honestly difficult to break into this category.
  • Active since two months ago (from X and GitHub history).
    • The Global Hackathon rules state that submissions made within the past two months are evaluated. However, teams with projects developed over two months ago or existing projects have also won.
    • Preparation periods are considered to have been implemented much earlier (e.g. 6 months in advance).
  • Top winners often gain attention prior to the event
    • Although not active in broadcasting on platform X, they often become a topic of discussion beforehand. This suggests strategic reputation management. Likely, some teams are lobbying through networks such as Superteam and their connections.
  • Prepare everything available (pitch, video presentation, demo, source code, X account)

Systemization Concept

Middle to High

The technical implementation (e.g. system architecture) is important.

Specification Documents

Small

No specification-related documentation is required.

Source code

Small

Business ideas and presentations are emphasized over technical coding.

It's fine to write code as an added bonus to a great business idea. However, code is not reviewed during the initial shortlist selection process.

However, if you are aiming for the top prize, you must deploy your prototype on Devnet.

Prototype

Medium to High

It must be deployed on the Devnet and ready to be touched.

However, there is only so much that can be developed during the Hackathon, so you will need to be selective about which features to create.

Some teams develop modules in advance and assemble them during the Hackathon. However, you will need to check with Colosseum to see if this method is OK.

Please thoroughly test your prototype to make sure there are no bugs. If it doesn't work or there are bugs that cause it to stop midway, it will be negatively evaluated.

Presentation

Presentation

High

To communicate clearly and appropriately, it's necessary to organize the structure well. Judges review a vast amount of presentations, so it's important to make them easy to understand, simple, and concise. It is also necessary to present through videos, not just documents, and include a demo that explains the product within the video.

Narrative video

High

Videos that effectively convey value are prioritized. The more time it takes to understand a hackathon submission's purpose and value, the more likely it is to be skipped, making concise and clear communication essential.

Marketing

Whether it is recognized

High

It is important that the project has somehow come to the attention of the judges and is recognized prior to evaluation.

Social media communication ability (X)

Small

It doesn't matter how many followers X has or who they follow. Among the winners of the May 2024 Renaissance Hackathon, there were projects that did not have X accounts.

Pitch Deckはストーリーが大事

37

The Pitch Deck serves as a supplement to the story. Slides, pictures, and bullet points do not supplement the story. In particular, the story should include the Vision, Problem, Solutions, and Product.

(Example of an actual story by the data2tx team)

Our vision is for a billion people around the world to collaborate to build AI at scale on Solana. We want to contribute to the development of AI by building large, useful datasets to foster innovation and respect intellectual property through individual contributions.

In recent years, the rapid development of generative AI has highlighted serious issues related to copyright infringement. For example, a major photostock is seeking damages of $150,000 each for 12 million images, for a total of $1.8 trillion, for the unauthorized use of copyright-protected images for training of generative AI.

Such cases pose a significant risk to the development of AI and make it difficult to develop sustainable and ethical AI.

Therefore, based on our knowledge of AI development to date, we spent over a year working with lawyers to find a solution to the laws and regulations, and our patent application was filed along with the conclusion of our work. In order to minimize the risk of copyright infringement and to provide an environment where AI developers can acquire hundreds of millions of units of training data with peace of mind, we are building a marketplace for AI training data using Solana. This mechanism will support highly reliable AI development by providing data providers with reasonable compensation and purchasers with copyright-cleared data.

We plan to handle location-based image data, for which demand is expected to grow. Specifically, we anticipate a wide range of applications, including region-specific generative AI, automated driving, robotics, and image production. In this way, we are contributing to the development of future AI and taking steps toward building a better society.

Reputation building and value proposition

No matter how great a business plan is, it won't spread if it remains unknown and its value isn't conveyed to the public. Therefore, it is essential to build a reputation in advance and express the value proposition in a way that maximizes its impact.
