Welcome to P2C Math

We answer the age-old question: “When are we ever going to use this?”

  • The Pathway2Careers Math Curriculum puts problem-solving and career-connected learning at the forefront of math class.
  • We expose students to more than 650 careers and teach essential math skills in the context of on-the-job learning.
  • Our math lessons range from foundational, to conceptual application, to problem-based projects.
  • They use real-time labor market career data, Career Stories and videos, and real life on-the-job scenarios that continually position students to problem-solve and think critically about math in a way that is relevant to them and applicable to their future.

About P2C Math Assessments

6 of 28

Overview of P2C Math Assessments

  • Our assessments were produced in partnership with MetaMetrics and are powered by the Quantile Framework for Mathematics.
  • The Assessments should be given as close to the start of math instruction as possible.
  • Assessments are aligned to the appropriate point in the curriculum, and they cover varying amounts of math content strands (Number Sense, Numerical Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability).

  • Results are reported in the form of a Quantile Score, which shows what skills and concepts a student is ready to learn for a standard. (We will have a master class on doing this on October 15, 2024)

The Assessment Experience

Timing

  • The assessments are untimed, but they are designed to be completed within 30-35 minutes.
    • If assessments are taking students long than ~45 minutes to complete, it is typically an indication that they are struggling.
    • Feel free to allow students additional time, as long as they are not frustrated with the assessments.
    • Allow the assessment to be divided over multiple days if needed (unless a student who is frequently absent from school is present).

Questions

  • Assessments consist of 30 multiple choice items.
  • Students may return to previous items if needed.
  • Students are able to retake assessments, but this is not recommended.

The Assessment Experience

Resources

  • A built-in calculator and a formula sheet are provided in the platform for applicable items.
  • Teachers should provide students with a pencil and graph paper.

Scoring

  • Assessment items are automatically scored.
  • Results are reported as a Quantile Score.
  • Both teachers and students can see assessment scores in the “Scoring” section of the P2C platform.

About the Assessment Data

The Assessment data CAN be used to:

The Assessment data CANNOT be used to:

  • Produce a Quantile Score, which has a national norm
  • Measure students’ mathematical abilities
  • Help teachers anticipate students’ learning and enrichment needs prior to instruction
  • Grade students
  • Pass or fail students

Preparing for the Assessments

  • Set aside time to administer the assessment
    • Consider setting aside one uninterrupted day or set aside part of a class for two days per week.
      • Assessments do not have to be completed in one session. Progress can be saved!
  • Communicate with students
    • Be clear about the purpose of taking the assessments
    • Talk to students about why the data is important and how it will be utilized
    • Review the instruction page as a class

NOTE: The “Student Slides” on the following slides can be used to communicate with students regarding the assessments.

P2C Math Assessments

  • What is a P2C Math Assessment?
    • We’ll be taking three math assessments in P2C throughout this year. These assessments are neither a test nor are they for a grade. Rather, the assessments simply provide a way for me to better understand your math abilities, so that I can determine how to best support or advance you with the math lessons.
  • Why are we taking these assessments?
    • When you take this assessment, your scores will provide me with insight into two areas:
      • Being able to see where you may need support or enrichment in a math less prior to beginning the lessons
      • Tracking the growth of your math skills throughout the school year
  • How long are the assessments?
    • The assessments contain 30 multiple choice questions and are designed to be completed within 30-35 minutes.

13 of 28

  • What is on the assessments?
    • The assessments will have a variety of math problems, which are grade-level appropriate each point in the year (beginning, middle, and end).
  • Will the assessments be difficult?
    • The assessments are not intended to be difficult; rather, they are designed to allow us to better understand your mathematical abilities.
    • Some questions will provide calculators and formula sheets to help you solve them. If there is a question or concept that you do not fully understand, please try your best to answer it.
    • You can flag the question on the assessment for later review or simply move on to the next question.

  • Can my teacher help me if needed?
    • Due to the nature of the assessments being designed to better articulate your true mathematical ability, teachers cannot help you with the assessments or answer any questions. Having to move to the next question only means you are not quite ready for that math yet, which lets us know that you are moving past the question, as opposed to frustrating yourself or guessing.

  • When can I see my score?
    • You are able to access your score in the Pathway2Careers platform immediately after completing the assessment. This data helps me understand how to better prepare for lessons, and it can help you to gauge the careers best suited for you in the future. Remember, your score will increase throughout the years.
  • What does my score tell us?
    • Your score explains:
      • The type of support or enrichment you may need for each lesson
      • The amount of growth you need prior to graduating high school, in order to begin training for a career of your choice

Administering Assessments

Administering the Assessments

Do:

  • Monitor students at all times throughout the assessment.
  • Provide students with graph paper and a pencil.
  • Review the overview in the platform with students prior to taking the assessment.
  • Make students aware that you cannot help them with the assessment, but that their best efforts are enough for us.
  • Let students know that it’s okay to move beyond a question if they feel frustrated.

Viewing Scores and Data

21 of 28

Sort careers by Quantile, or search careers by name and see the required Quantile Score.

Note: The Quantile score listed for a career is the score that students are expected to have before they begin education or training.

This score is usually expected by the time students finish high school, so they should not be discouraged if their Quantile score doesn’t initially align with the career Quantile.

Ready-to-Go Checklist

Beginning, Middle, and End of Year Assessments

  • Prepare for Assessments (Day 1: 10-15 min. - Can be abbreviated for Middle/End of Year Assessment)
    • Overview assessment with students (Student Slides)
    • Communicate upcoming assessments to in the form of a letter to the parents
    • Assign assessments in P2C Platform
  • Administer Assessments (Day 2: 30-35 min.)

Want to go a step further?

Optional, but helpful to do…

In general:

  • Start observing and noting trends in students’ learning and communication styles.

With Survey Data:

  • Have additional discussions about needs and engagement with students
  • Collaborate with your class or other teachers on a plan for student engagement

With Assessment Data and Careers:

  • Allow students to explore Quantile-aligned careers
  • Have students take Career Assessments (Interests, Values, and Cluster Matchers)
  • Brainstorm business leaders or community members who work in the occupations spotlighted in upcoming lessons
