Conduct a mock interview with either a fictional character from a book or movie, or a historical figure. Students can create a character profile including background information, the character’s motivation, or the types of problems the character is facing.

Students conduct an “interview” with their character where they respond as if they were the character, sharing their thoughts and feelings. Students can generate and respond to their own interview questions.

An example character interview with Bilbo Baggins from “The Hobbit” is provided.

Bilbo’s response

Question 1

Throughout your journey, you encountered various challenges and creatures, such as trolls, goblins, and spiders. Can you describe one of the most frightening or challenging moments you experienced?

Well, you see, one of the most spine-chilling moments on my journey was when I found myself ensnared by the spiders in the shadowy depths of Mirkwood Forest. It was a truly daunting experience, with their sticky webs closing in on me, and the whole forest seemed to be teeming with these menacing creatures. I was outnumbered and trapped, and fear crept over me.

But I couldn't just give in to terror. I remembered the wisdom of my companions and used the magic ring to become invisible. It was a moment of great personal growth for me, as I had to summon all my courage and resourcefulness to escape that perilous situation. Facing these challenges head-on taught me a lot about myself and the world beyond the Shire.
