Our Purpose

This mission is accomplished by:

Providing a forum where staff may discuss university related issues.
Providing information and staff perspective to the administration.
Fostering respect, communication, and collaboration.
Advocating for staff in appropriate forums

Past Accomplishments

Since foundation on November 26, 1974 CUCSA has:

Established the Systemwide Staff Engagement Survey
Developed and advocated for the Staff Advisor to the Regents position
Supported benefits for non-traditional families
Advocated for paid family leave (effective 7/1/2021)
Partnered with faculty to advocate for better retirement benefits
Advocated for pay increases before the Board of Regents
Served on systemwide committees and task forces
Created systemwide CUCSA Town Halls open to all staff

Workgroup Leadership:

Policy Covered Staff Identities - Kaeleigh Hayakawa, Irvine

The Policy-Covered Staff Identities Workgroup is tasked with identifying and defining who policy-covered staff are within the UC system. This group aims to utilize data and staff narratives to provide a comprehensive understanding of policy-covered staff, highlighting their impact and concerns across different locations. The workgroup's objective is to facilitate better stakeholder understanding and advocacy for UC staff members through a detailed portrayal of staff experiences.
I will add that as part of this workgroups efforts we recently sent out a questionnaire to colleagues and many of our locations and received valuable information that helps us understand where people are at with their experience as an employee at UC. CUCSA being a staff supported staff centric entity makes it easier for our colleagues to feel safer talking to us. And in turn this helps provide us with direction and insight into areas we can advocate for.

Sustainable Workforce - Greta Halle, Santa Barbara

The Sustainable Staffing Workgroup is focused on evaluating staffing ratios and the effects of vacancies on both employees and the organization. This group is also reassessing work methods to better cater to staff needs and preferences, aiming to enhance retention within the UC system. Additionally, the group seeks to address burnout effectively and to identify best practices for flexible work arrangements to improve staff wellbeing.

Wellness - Courtney Klein, Berkeley

The Wellbeing Workgroup is dedicated to defining and promoting overall employee wellness within the UC system. The group distinguishes between wellness and wellbeing, advocating for a holistic approach to employee health. The Workgroup is focused on initiatives such as advancing the Okanagan Charter, identifying tools for supervisors to manage hybrid work environments effectively, and establishing best practices for mentorship and coaching programs. Additionally, the group aims to update sick leave policies to encompass both physical and mental health concerns, aligning with evolving standards in wellbeing management.

Compensation - Dre Graeser, San Francisco

This workgroup is focused on various aspects of compensation and financial understanding for UC staff, including reviewing hiring salary postings, developing tools like personal budget calculators, and coordinating with campus leaders to gain insights into campus-level finances. The group also manages data inquiries to ensure comprehensive understanding and implementation of compensation-related policies
I will highlight that this workgroup has conducted interviews with key financial individuals at each location asking questions around budget and compensation to better inform our delegation about the budget structures locally and so we can share best practices.
