The Problem

On Line 12, baskets can be incorrectly fed into the elevator. This can result in an elevator crash causing downtime or potential damage to the elevator. This downtime results in the entire line being down. This has now happened more than once.

Temporary Solution

  • Signs
  • Cones
  • Caution tape

This is to prevent people from loading baskets from the side of the conveyor.

  1. Add Photo Eye Sensor

On Line 12 there is only one photo eye on the belt conveyor (inside the elevator).

  • Add a second photo eye to detect double loaded baskets and stop conveyor/ elevator
  • Easiest to implement
  • Out of the way
  • Extra sensor already in place on line 13 elevator

2. Infeed Conveyor

Currently there is no system/conveyer to introduce outside baskets into the elevator

  • Gives the user the ability to set it on the conveyor without causing issues
  • Costly and would take time and labor
  • Takes up additional space

3. Guarding and Signs

Originally there was nothing to detour an operator from loading a basket from the side of the conveyor, potentially causing wrecks

  • We implemented temporary signage and detourants
  • Replace temporary solution with guarding
  • Attach new sign to guarding
  • Very noticeable that baskets are not to be placed there
  • Guarding may be in the way of maintenance if not made removable

4. Program an existing sensor to time out

Currently the conveyor sensor can see two baskets as one if loaded incorrectly

  • Implement program that reads the amount of time photo eye is sensing a “basket”
  • If photo eye is sensing for too long (two baskets worth of time) It will recognize this and stop the conveyance
  • Wouldn’t have to add another sensor
  • Would need to alter existing programing
