Objectives:
Objective - Students will be understand what power is, create a question and investigate it.
Sub Objectives:
SWBAT understand what power is.
SWBAT create a question and investigate.
SWBAT take part in a board meeting.
Today we will understand what power is, and what watts are, so that we can apply our understanding to create a question to investigate.
I know I succeeded if my team was able to collect data and participate in a board meeting.

Intro/Driving Question/Opening
Today we are going to be looking at a STEM lesson. We are focusing on two areas of STEM, Science and Math
How have/can you use science in STEM?
How have/can you use math in STEM?
Based on the title, how can we use science and math together?
What is something we can not live without?
Power and Energy
What is POWER?
Power…
is the rate of producing or consuming energy
What is energy?
Energy…
is the ability to do work
How do power and energy work together?
Energy is the total amount of work done, and power is how fast you can do it.
How do we experience power?
SOUND
LIGHT
HEAT
MOVEMENT
How do we measure power?
What do these things have in common?
What does each itm use as a unit of measurement?
This is an electricity usage monitor
What unit of of measurement does power use?
Watts
What is a measure of the rate of energy transfer over a unit of time
Hands-on Activity Instructions
Come up with a question that you will use to guide you investigation.
Two things to focus on:
Time of use
Watts
Then create a table for the data you will be collecting.
Hands-on Activity Instructions
Everyone in your table must test out at least one item and use the electricity usage monitor.
You will only have two minutes to use each item and collect data.
CER
Write a CER paragraph answering the question you and your team created. Then write it on your whiteboards.
Rewrite question
Claim
Evidence
Reading
Board Meeting
Teams will stand together to read their CER to the group.
Person 1 Read questions and the Claim
Person 2: Read your Evidence and explain table if they have it
Person 3: Read your Reasoning
One person from the team that is next must use the chart to add to that teams
Board Meeting
Comprehend |
Can you explain more about…? |
Are you thinking…? |
Why do you think…? |
How do you generate your claim? |
What reasoning can you support the evidence? |
Critique |
I respectfully disagree that …because… |
Your reasoning does not make sense to me because… |
I understand why you say that, but I do not agree this part because… |
Construct |
I agree with your ideas because… |
I would like to add on….; I would like to revise my claim because…. |
If you revise/ add this…., the argument would make sense to me. |
Express |
I noticed…; I observed…; I wonder…..; I think….because |
My data shows…. |
Assessment
Transform
What would you have done differently in your investigation?
Reflect
Apply
What other things would we investigate based on this information?
