The Flow of Fluids

6 of 13

What is Fluid Dynamics?

Fluid Dynamics are the flow of fluids which can be gases or liquids

This can help us understand why the smoke fired out of the cannon is in the shape of a ring

Vortex Rings

8 of 13

How are they created

Vortex Rings are created when a fluid is forced through a hole

This forces the fluid to curl back in on itself creating the ring shape called a torus

Materials

  • Rubber bands
  • Plastic cup (with hole cut)
  • Balloon
  • Smoke (optional)

12 of 13

Instructions

  1. Cut & and stretch a balloon over one side of a plastic cup
  2. Secure with a rubber band over the edges
  3. Put smoke in the chamber of air (optional)
  4. Pull on the balloon and release!
