The Book of Revelation Week 8

The Coming Paradise

  • Thousand Year Reign

When is it?

  • The Bottomless Pit
  • The dragon who is Satan is thrown into the pit.
  • Jewish Tradition believed the temple was built on a rock which was the “plug” of the nether world.
  • The Foundation stone kept the abyss in, kept evil from having full reign on earth.
  • The Foundation Stone

Talk about how it is built on the place where solomon, son of david built the temple. Also where Herod’s temple was destoryed in 70AD. Tradition also puts this as the place where Abraham was going to sacrifice Isaac.

Read From Barber Page 245-246

To put it simply This foundation stone is designed to keep those in the abyss from creating havoc on earth .

  • The Bottomless Pit
  • The dragon who is Satan is thrown into the pit.
  • Jewish Tradition believed the temple was built on a rock which was the “plug” of the nether world.
  • The Foundation stone kept the abyss in, kept evil from having full reign on earth.
  • The Church as the Foundation Stone
  • Matthew 16:18-19
  • The Temple, built on the foundation stone is now found in the Church built on the foundation stone of peter.
  • The Church is the plug which holds in the dragon in it’s place.
  • A Key and Chain
  • Matthew 16:18-19. Peter has Keys to the Kingdom
  • More symbolism with the temple.
  • Those who told the truth during a court hearing would hold this chain, if he lied a link would fall off. Connected with Solomon's court room near the temple
  • You can see this today in Modern Jerusalem
  • The Dome of the Chain

Located next to Dome of the Rock.

  • Satan Being Bound
  • There is an interesting connection between Satan being bound and exorcism. Satan is bound.
  • Exorcism means “to oath out.” connected to God’s promise to David, the Devil was exorcised or bound so he can long longer deceive the nations.
  • All of this points to the answer of what the 1000 years represent.
  • The 1000 year Reign

Question Answered

  • The Protestant Answer
  • Future kingdom yet to exist on earth.
  • Satan will be bound, he isn’t yet, and there will be an earthly kingdom of Christ on earth.
  • Some protestants suggest this is God’s second attempt to convert the Jewish nation, who denied him in acts.
  • You will see this defined as Millennialism, there are many different ways to approach it.
  • The Church’s Position
  • The long standing tradition of the Church is the viewpoint that we are in the 1000 year reign NOW.
  • The Church is the reign of Christ which will exist for 1000 years.
    • This isn’t a literal 1000 years
    • Rather symbolic signifying vastness a number to great to be counted
  • See your handouts.
  • Answering the Question
  • The thousand years is symbolic.
  • Begins at Pentecost, ends when Christ comes again.
  • The Church is the reign of Christ during the 1000 years.
  • All the symbolism of the temple points to Christ being the new temple.
  • The Church is the Body of Christ also meaning she is the new temple.
  • The Church keeps the devil bound in the pit until Christ comes again.
  • The final Battle

The Battle of Gog and Magog

  • Two Resurrections
  • Before the Satan is loosed, There is the “first resurrection”
  • If there is a first there must be a second
  • First resurrection is after our own death and judgement.
  • The Second resurrection is when all are raised from the dead and brought before the lamb (Revelation 20:12-15)
  • The Battle of Gog and Magog
  • At the end of the thousand year reign of the Church
  • Gog and Magog where spoken of in Ezekiel 38-39.
  • In the Old Testament these figures came out against the Davidic Messiah
  • Now they come out against God and his Church.
  • God will have final victory and they will be thrown back into the lake of fire never to return again.
  • A reminder for us to always be prepared for the second coming of Christ! (Matthew 25)

It may be good to note that Satan will be unleashed on the earth again. We must be prepared for this time if it comes while we are on earth, if not we still need to be prepared for his second coming in our own lives our own deaths.

  • Final Judgment and New Creation
  • God’s Throne Appears Again
  • Represents Rightful Power
  • Thrones are mentioned elsewhere in Revelation 4:2, 10; 5:1; 7:10
  • Romans 14:10 references this vision, Revelation refers to God being the one who judges.
  • The Second Ressurection
  • “I saw the Dead, great and small, standing before the throne”
    • A reference, also with v. 13 of the second resurrection.
  • We profess this in our creed
  • Catechism 998
  • Who will rise? All the dead will rise, “those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.”
  • The book of Life
  • All those who will be saved are written in the book of life.
  • All those not found in the book of life thrown into the lake of fire, or hell.
  • This symbolizes God’s final judgment.
  • After this moment only two places we can end up. Hell or Heaven
  • After the final judgment, we will be body and soul in hell or heaven
  • New Heavens and a New Earth
  • Creation is Renewed by God after the judgment
  • No longer does corruption exist, death, destruction, etc.
  • Heaven fully exists in earth and visa versa.
  • We will exist here after our last judgment.
  • C.F. CCC 1042-48
  • Our Glorified Bodies
  • We will not receive the same bodies we have now.
  • Our bodies will be like Christ’s resurrected glorified body.
    • He passed through walls
    • Could appear anywhere he wanted to.
    • No disease
    • No pain
    • No death
  • Revelation 21:4
  • C.F. CCC 988-1014
  • The New Jerusalem
  • Those on earth can now participate fully in the liturgy of heaven.
  • We receive a taste of this at Mass (C.F. week 3)
  • The Vision of the New Jerusalem is similar to the vision of the temple in Ezekiel 40
  • River of the Water of Life
    • Ezekiel 47
    • Water and Blood would flow from the temple during the sacrifices
    • Jesus water and blood pour from his side, symbolizing this same action in the temple.
    • This river points to the Lord’s passion and death as well
    • From the side of Christ and through the Church, God pours out an abundance of his grace to his people. Through it we receive abundance and life.
  • The New Jerusalem is the perfection of the Church.
  • The Marriage of the Lamb
  • The priest says this at mass “Blessed are those called to the super of the lamb” (Revelation 19:9)
  • This is the union of Christ to his Church, or that man is perfectly united to God.
    • Revelation 21:3 “the dwelling of God is with men”
  • C.F. Ephesians 5:28-33
  • A Few Final Notes
  • Revelation 22:5 is the end of the vision.
  • Revelation 22:6-21 is John’s way of concluding his letter. He still records the Son of Man speaking to him, as he did in Revelation 1
  • Revelation 22:21 ends the same way 2 Thessalonians ends. We use this same phrase in Mass “the Lord Be with you.”
