  1. A man with a white beard lived in Turkey. He was so generous that he used to give away gifts to the poor kids during winter season . Stories of his good deeds spread across the world and now people continue his legacy by distributing gifts during this celebration.

2. God asked a father to sacrifice his only son. To show his obedience to God, the father took the son to the mountain and raised his sword to behead him. Suddenly God stopped him and showed him a lamb to sacrifice instead. To celebrate the father’s obedience and God’s love, even today a lamb is sacrificed during this festival.

4. The king thought that unmarried men made better soldiers and thus forbade them from marriage. A priest conducted marriages in secret to unite young lovers. The king was furious and killed the priest. Now, that day is celebrated in his name to spread the ideals of love.

LAYING OF FLORAL CARPETS

A ritual popular in Kerala is the laying of floral carpets during onam. The legend behind this ritual is that when Vamana was about to push King Mahabali down to the underground, the king asked Vamana to grant him a wish and allow him to visit his subjects every year. This was promptly granted to him and to celebrate his visit, the people of Kerala lay colourful floral carpets. It promotes brotherhood among people as everyone participates in its preparation.
