English meals

  • The Englishmen usually have four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, tea (5 o'clock) and dinner.

  • A full “English breakfast” consists of cornflakes with milk and sugar, or some bacon and fried or boiled eggs, toast and marmalade, tea or coffee.

  • Some people just have a cup of tea or coffee with a toast. Instead of porridge they can also have fruit juice and biscuits. This is usually called "continental breakfast."

The Englishmen sometimes have muffins for breakfast. They are similar to a cupcake in size and cooking methods. These can come in both savory varieties, such as corn or cheese muffins, or sweet varieties such as blueberry or banana.

  • At midday everything is stopped for lunch. Most small shops and offices are closed for an hour and people visit cafes, coffee bars and restaurants.

  • The workers of the factories usually eat in their canteens. The Englishmen like what they call "good plain food”. This meal starts with soup or fruit juice. Then follows some meat or poultry with potatoes, carrots and beans. Then they eat pudding or cheesecakes, drink coffee, juice or lemonade.

  • Afternoon tea is at about 5 o'clock. On the table there is tea, milk or cream, bread and butter, cakes and jam.

  • Dinner is usually at 7 o'clock and all family get together. The main course can be fish or meat (roast beef) with a lot of vegetables: potatoes, green beans, carrots and cabbage. The next course is something sweet, such as a fruit pie, ice-cream or fruit salad.

  • The Englishmen like tea very much. They have tea six or eight times a day.
