What is Horizon Europe

• It is European Commission’s € 95.5 billion programme investing in research and innovation for seven years (2021-2027) with the aims:

to strengthen the EU's scientific and technological bases

to boost Europe's innovation capacity, competitiveness and jobs

to deliver on citizens' priorities and sustain socioeconomic model and values

Armenia has been granted association status to the Horizon Europe Programme since 2021.

Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence

2. Twinning aims to enhance networking activities between the research institutions of the Widening countries and top-class leading counterparts at EU level by linking it with at least two research institutions from two different Member States or Associated Countries, outlining research strategy.

• Funding: Between € 0.8 to 1.50 million (CSA, up to 3 years)
• Next possible Call in 2026

3. Excellence hubs Excellence Hubs will strengthen regional innovation excellence in Widening countries and beyond by teaming up and creating robust linkages between at least two Widening Country R&I ecosystems, each including academic institutions, business entities, public authorities, and societal actors, or one or more umbrella organizations comprising these four categories.

• Funding: Between € 2.00 to 5.00 (6.00 million if mentoring component included; CSA, up to 4 years)
• Next possible Call in 2026

1. Teaming for Excellence aims to create new or modernize existing centers of excellence in Widening countries through strategic partnerships with leading institutions abroad. A Teaming project must involve at least two beneficiaries: a main applicant from a university, research organization, for-profit research entity, national or regional authority, or research funding agency in a Widening country, and at least one leading university or research organization from another Member State or Associated Country.

• Funding: Between € 8 to 15 million (CSA, up to 6 years)

• Call Opening: 03 Dec 2024
• Deadline(s): 10 Apr 2025 (First Stage), 20 Jan 2026 (Second Stage)

4. The Hop On Facility aims to improve the inclusiveness of Horizon Europe by involving one additional participant from a Widening country to an ongoing project under Pillar 2 or the EIC pathfinder scheme while topping up a relevant task or work package and the cost incurred by the additional participant.

Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence

• HORIZON-WIDERA-2023 ACCESS-06
• Funding: € 0,1 to 0,6 million (RIA)

Who:

• A consortium funded under Pillar II or EIC Pathfinder actions with no partner from a Widening country
• A legal entity from a Widening Country wishing to join this collaborative R&I Action

How:

• The proposal must be submitted by the coordinator of the consortium funded under Pillar 2 or EIC Pathfinder based on added value of a new partner performing additional task in the project.

• Call Opening: 10 Jan 2023
• Deadlines: 28 Sep 2023; 26 Sep 2024

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships

ERA Fellowships

• MSCA Fellowships are provided to excellent researchers undertaking international mobility. Applications will be made jointly by the researcher and a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector.

​

• The ERA Fellowships are a part of Widening Participation & Spreading Excellence and are open for applicants of any nationality with a beneficiary from a Widening Country (Armenia).

​

• In order to apply for the ERA Fellowships call, applicants must submit their proposal to the MSCA PF call and opt in at the applications stage.

​

• The excellent applications to the MSCA PF that cannot be funded under MSCA due to the budget constrains (fail to reach an adequate place in the ranking to be funded) will be automatically resubmitted to the ERA Fellowships call.

​

• Global Fellowships are not eligible.

​

• Aim: Creation of Centers of Excellence by attracting outstanding researchers to EU countries with lower R&I performance. Effective institutional reforms in research institutions in widening countries; reverting brain drain.

​

• Benefits: Armenian diaspora scientists can leverage their expertise to lead high-quality research centers in Armenia or other EU Widening countries. This role facilitates the transfer of knowledge and skills, strengthening local research capacities and enhancing integration into European research networks.

​

• Target: Institutions in Armenia can host diaspora scientists, enhancing local scientific capabilities and fostering international collaboration .

​

• Funding rate: Between € 1.50 to 2.50 million (CSA, up to 5 years)
• Next possible Call in 2026

European Research Area Chairs (ERA Chairs)

European Research Council (ERC)

• The fundamental activity of the ERC, via its main frontier research grants, is to provide attractive, long-term funding to support excellent investigators (Principal Investigators) and their research teams to pursue ground-breaking and ambitious research, on the basis of scientific excellence.

​

• An ERC grant is awarded to the institution that engages and hosts the Principal Investigator(s).

• Advanced Grant
• Deadline: 29 August 2024
• Funding: Grant up to €2.5 million for 5 years

• Proof of Concept Grant
• Deadline: 17 September 2024
• Funding: Lump Sum Grant of €150,000 for a period of 18 months

• Criteria: Applications can be made in any field of research.

​

• Location: Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (known as a Host Institution/HI). It could be the HI where the applicant already works, or any other HI located in one of the EU Member States or Associated Countries.

​

• Host Institution: Applications for an ERC grant require a single Principal Investigator (PI) to submit the application on behalf of their host institution.

​

• Team: ERC grants support projects carried out by an individual researcher who can employ researchers of any nationality as team members. It is also possible to have one or more team members located in a non-European country.
