Now That We Have A Unit Map…

Digging in with Backwards Mapping

Reflection as you go and when the unit is complete!

10 of 22

Backwards Mapping to...

  • Increase CLARITY
  • Improve future core plans
  • Record/Remove strategies
  • Add/revise assessments given
  • Know which standards and corresponding learning targets were taught (and which were not!)
  • Identify known holes in student learning

Understanding

Antecedents of Excellence

It is important to understand the relationship between intended, implemented and learned curriculum.

  • Record of what you taught
  • Record of student achievement
  • Replicate or replace

You May Have a Moment When...

What Does a “Completed” Backward Map Look Like?

Take a moment to look at the unit/backward map on your table.

14 of 22

Wait! Are We Making ANOTHER Map?

This year’s unit map...

Next year’s unit map (after backwards mapping)

This sounds helpful, but how???

How to Backwards Map

  • Color coding option
  • Looking at the PRIORITY standards
      • Red: We did not teach this
      • Yellow: We introduced this, but did not cover it all
      • Blue: We taught this completely
  • Anecdotal notes option
      • Add a column, take notes right on your map
  • Other ideas?

Make a note of any other ideas that you have for this and set a time for your team to discuss!

17 of 22

Record Additional Info

  • Add instructional strategies you used to teach these targets throughout the unit.
  • Add assessment information and/or links so you can quickly find them in the future (if you have this).
  • Add pictures of your own stuff (anchor charts etc).
  • Now that you know your materials better, keep the parts that worked and add in other elements you tried. If something didn’t work, take it out!

Keep in Mind...

Step 7 Feedback in Action

Find your feedback form linked to the top of your projection map.

Use this form to input all feedback that you have on projection maps. You will forget by April!

Were there issues with the projection map?

  • Standard should be moved
  • Pacing
  • Units should be re-ordered

20 of 22

Work Time

  • Decide on how your team wants to record their reflections.
  • Get into your Unit 1 map (even if you are not quite done with it) and start backward mapping.
  • If you finish, move onto forward mapping another unit!

21 of 22

Next Steps: Put Reflection into Action

Take a look at your team’s agenda:

  • Insert a mid-unit reflection
  • Insert an end of unit reflection

Remember, these are placeholders and can be moved if needed!
