It's the only star
in the solar system.
It rises in the east and sets in the west.
The Sun
Areas on Earth facing away from the Sun experience nighttime.
Areas facing the Sun experience daytime.
Daytime and Nighttime
Earth takes one day to complete one rotation on its axis.
What activities can you do during
daytime, noontime,
and nighttime?
THE MOON
The phases of the Moon change
at different times in a month.
Its position in the night sky also helps tell the time.
It's called Earth's "natural satellite."
It may look like a bright circle on some nights
and a tiny sliver of light on others.
Groups of stars
form constellations.
They look like little dots in the
night sky because they're very,
very far away from Earth.
Stars are giant balls of gases.
THE STARS
Constellations have been used
for navigation and storytelling
throughout history.
This constellation is called Ursa Major
(The Great Bear), where the Big Dipper belongs.
Telling Time
Nighttime
The Sun rises in the east, and the sky becomes bright and clear.
Daytime
The Sun reaches its highest point in the sky and is directly overhead.
Noontime
The Sun has set,
and the Moon and stars appear in the sky.

How does
the Big Dipper
tell time?
The Big Dipper is a group of stars
that resembles a giant soup ladle.
It has seven bright stars,
making it easy to spot in the night sky.
Polaris
(North Star)
The Big Dipper
appears to circle
the Polaris.
It moves slowly,
just like the
hands of a clock.
Imagine a line connecting the two stars—Polaris and
the star at the end
of the ladle.
As you trace the broken line, it
points to different numbers on our imaginary clock.
