Arts & Computer Science Integrated Leadership Project Year 1

May 2024 – December 2024

4 of 15

Participants

  • engage in focused professional learning on California Computer Science Standards,
  • identify and implement entry points to authentically integrate the CA Computer Science Standards within arts teaching contexts,
  • build leadership capacity within arts disciplines,
  • be part of TCAP’s statewide role to disseminate resulting learning, and
  • examine outcomes to identify program aspects to integrate into TCAP’s professional learning models.

The California Arts Standards

Artistic Processes

Anchor Standards: Students will…

Creating

Conceiving and developing new artistic ideas and work.

1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

3. Refine and complete artistic work.

Performing / Presenting / Producing

Realizing artistic ideas and work through interpretation and presentation.

4. Analyze, interpret, and select artistic work for presentation.

5. Develop and refine artistic work for presentation.

6. Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.

Responding

Understanding and evaluating how the arts convey meaning.

7. Perceive and analyze artistic work.

8. Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.

9. Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.

Connecting

Relating artistic ideas and work with personal meaning and external context.

10. Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.

11. Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding.

CA Computer Science StandardsThe CS standards include five core concept areas, couple with seven core practices that demonstrate ways in which students actively engage in computer science learning experiences that build conceptual knowledge

  • The computer science core concepts include:
    • Computing Systems (CS)
    • Networks and the Internet (NI)
    • Data and Analysis (DA)
    • Algorithms and Programming (AP)
    • Impacts of Computing (IC)
  • The computer science core practices include:
    1. Fostering an Inclusive Computing Culture
    2. Collaborating Around Computing
    3. Recognizing and Defining Computational Problems
    4. Developing and Using Abstractions
    5. Creating Computational Artifacts
    6. Testing and Refining Computational Artifacts
    7. Communicating About Computers

CS Core Concept: Computing Systems

Devices: Hardware and Software

Troubleshooting

CS Core Practice 1: Fostering an Inclusive Computing Culture

Including unique perspectives

Address the needs of diverse users

AE Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

What intersections do you see between the CS core concept, CS core practice, AE anchor standard, and the AE enduring understanding and essential questions.

Computing systems (hardware) = Media (the tools we use to make, store, or share)

“Students learn how systems…represent and process information” = art as representation or conceptualization (e.g. Dance EU1 “transform concepts and ideas into movement for artistic expression.” or Music EQ1 “How do musicians generate creative ideas?”)

Troubleshooting = Refining & Assessment (e.g. Media Arts EQ1 “How can ideas for media arts productions be formed and developed to be effective and original?”)

“Considering the needs of diverse users during the design process is essential to producing inclusive computational products” = Not so much in AE 1, but I know this concept exists within the standards

“Based on personal interests, experiences, and needs” = Visual Art EQ 1.1a&b “1.2 How does knowing the contexts, histories, and traditions of art forms help us create works of art and design? Why do artists follow or break from established traditions?”
