Description: At the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, they have been using Lean problem solving tools and techniques for many years, but recently added more change management best practices to the mix. This webinar will review how they adapted their problem solving tool and process to better address the 'people side of change'.

Share experiences at CDPHE and how learning more about Design Thinking and Change Management have given her new information to add to Lean/QI projects that are creating better outcomes

At CDPHE, we had some consistent issues with our QI/Lean projects that were concerning when I started there 4 years ago (for example- heard a lot about not implementing projects, heard a lot about people being left out of decision making, weren’t really considering the customer impacts of projects, and a lot of people were afraid and burned out by change)
That’s when I started to feel that the QI/Lean tools were not quite enough (or at least the way we were using them wasn’t optimal to get more consistently good outcomes)
I also learned quickly how large and diverse the work of the CDPHE was (as I had worked in healthcare and local public health before), so I needed some new strategies
Fast forward 4 years, I’ve have opportunities to learn more about Design Thinking and Change Management and have been working to integrate these into our QI/Lean projects
I use the analogy of cooking and feel like the QI/Lean tools I originally was taught on are like a very solid tasty recipe that works very well, but when you have cooked with them for awhile you are able to experiment with adding in some new flavors. Design Thinking and Change Management are those new flavors for me and I’m looking forward to us learning more about those together today and then examining our own recipes for how we are doing QI/Lean in your work to see if you are ready to add some new flavors (or maybe you’ll find your recipe is already working just fine).

Our ‘original recipe’ (4 years ago in 2015) was the A3 (ask for a show of hands who’s heard of or use A3) + a separate scoping document

I have used a few different versions (most are similar, but some things seemed a bit different to me when I started)

Essentially the ‘recipe reviews’ were:

1) fairly logical as to what information goes in each box,
2) confusion over left to right (it’s actually top down on the left and then top down on the right),
3) formatting was a huge pain in the rear (merging cells, printing issues, etc.),
4) why did we define the target state before we knew the root cause?,
5) issues with the ends of the process (didn’t get buy in with the ‘problem statement’ and also the follow up and lessons learned didn’t explain how to sustain well– which was one of our main issues)
Told people they need to make sure to communicate (gave communication a shout out, but never a solid plan)

So, after watching an engineer waste several hours of time formatting this A3 for a project, I vowed to stop using the Excel format and create something easier 🡪 went to a google doc/Word version
