Unleashing the Power of Poor and Low-Income Americans & Waking the Sleeping Giant

In October 2021, after releasing the 2020 report “Unleashing the Power of Poor and Low-Income Americans”, we released a new report building on the work of our 2020 We Must Do MORE Program called "Waking the Sleeping Giant: Poor and Low-Income Voters in the 2020 Elections".

The report examined the role of poor and low-income voters in the 2020 elections and concluded that this multiracial voting bloc had an important impact on the results. This cuts against the commonly held perspective that poor and low-income people are apathetic about politics or inconsequential to election outcomes, and shows the critical potential of this "sleeping giant" for elections to come, if poor and low-income people are organized into a moral fusion movement that votes.

Somebody’s hurting our people and we won’t be silent anymore!

WE START TONIGHT! On September 19, 2022- 50 days from the midterm elections on November 8, 2022- we will launch our Voting is Power Unleashed Program, to ensure that the issues of poor and low-income people and low wage workers are at the center of the national narrative around the election, to engage poor and low-income infrequent voters in the election, and the campaign for the long-term, and to protect their vote.

We’re specifically saying our votes are not support, but our demands. Our votes are saying we won’t be silent any more, and demanding that the issues of the 140 million poor, low wealth and low wage people and low-wage workers are addressed by those in office. Issues that address the five interlocking injustices. Committed to the streets, the community, the political suites of the congress and state assemblies, the courts and the ballot box. Our voice and our power will be heard in all of these places-- not just an audible voice, but an action voice-- our protests will speak; our votes will speak.

In order to continue building on the policy, mobilizing, organizing, and voter education/registration work that we have done from 2020 until now,

We must reach critical turnout for the November 2022 elections and

contact at least 5 Million low income, low propensity voters nationally

in a coordinated national phone banking and text banking voter outreach, registration, and to the polls program.

Continuing to organize large swaths of the 140 million poor and low-income people in this country, understanding the proven significance and impact of this poor and low-income electorate on our democracy, is the next step in escalating our organizing strategy towards building a Third Reconstruction.

15 Strategic Priority States Based off

Moral Policy Analysis

These states reflect high percentages of LIV (Low income potential voter) who turned out in 2020 and a high percentage of LIV as a percentage of the overall electorate. So, the overall poor and low income electorate can play a significant role in election outcomes, and looking at margins of victory in midterm elections and what is at stake in elections this year in Congress and national landscape, these 15 states emerged as strategic priorities. For states not in these 15 states, the national movement landscape needs you to reach out to LIV base in your states so we can bring more folks into your campaigns, because we can make a difference in each state and build a buffer against the rising tide of extremism.

15 States:

Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin, West Virginia
