  • Not integrating the standards
  • Not crafting lessons that are a higher knowledge

Rubric

What will NOT change is the RUBRIC! It doesn’t matter what the grade level is or the topic is, all will be addressed by this same rubric. KNOW THIS RUBRIC.

Using the Rubrics

  • The Level 1 & Level 2 Rubrics tell you why the answer received the low score

Level 3 & Level 4 Rubrics

28 of 47

The main question: What do I study?

  • Study your National Board standards, with a focus on the searched terms or standards listed.

  • Review the specific prompts, break down to developmental, pedagogical, and content needs.
    • Write to the Constructed Response exercises.
    • Then, analyze against the Level 4 rubric:
      • Where are your strengths?
      • Where do you need more information?
        • where may you find it?
          • resources
          • people

Tips Continued

Know if you need to be given a response booklet! If you are a candidate in one of the following certificate areas taking one or more of the constructed response exercises listed below, you will be given a response booklet when you check into the testing site. DO NOT start your assessment until you have everything you need.

You also must be prepared to handwrite your National Board ID number on your response booklet.

    • EA/Mathematics: Exercises 1-3
    • AYA/Mathematics: Exercises 1-3
    • EAYA Music (Band, Orchestra, and Vocal): Exercise 3
    • EMC Music (Band, Orchestra, and Vocal): Exercise 3 PLEASE NOTE: The paper response booklet should NOT be used for the selected response portion of the exam.

External Supports

Teachers going through the process report that formal cohorts and NBCT mentors are an invaluable resource. There are many amazing candidate support programs across the country. Here are some resources to explore in accessing supports:

  • For more information on state or local programs, visit your state page and/or National Board Networks page.
  • There are two national programs open to all candidates:
  • There are a number of Facebook Groups related to National Board Certification. These groups are not organized or endorsed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
