Gifted Identification in Ohio

Identification Criteria

Green Local Schools follows the identification eligibility criteria as specified in the Ohio Revised Code and the Ohio Administrative Code. (Ohio Revised Code Section 3324.03)

  • The district identifies students in grades 2 through 12, as gifted. Accordingly a child can be identified as exhibiting A) superior cognitive ability; B) specific academic [reading, math, science and/or social studies; C) creative thinking; and/or D) visual/performing arts ability.

  • The district uses only those instruments approved by the Ohio Department of Education for screening, assessment, and identification of children who are gifted.

Honors Courses

Students are clustered together by need/ability and placed in a mixed ability classroom.

The teacher meets the needs of these students using differentiation strategies, social emotional supports, and curriculum compacting when appropriate.

Teachers also receive ongoing training, coaching, and support from a Gifted Intervention Specialist and from the Advanced Program Coordinator.

Honors courses are designed

to accelerate and/or extend the grade level standards to afford eligible students the opportunity to learn at an appropriate instructional pace and depth.

Math

Acceleration and subject compacting.

English Language Arts

Accelerated pacing and extension of curriculum.

Students may participate in any of the above courses in which they show a need/interest and for which they have met the prerequisites listed in the course guide.

Written Education Plan

Students in grades 2-12 who have been identified as gifted receive a Written Education Plan (WEP) each year that highlights services provided.

Teachers will report progress quarterly via the report card or individual family contact as needed.

  • Grades 2 and 3 will receive WEP’s during conference nights.

  • Grades 4-12 will receive WEP’s electronically at the end of the first quarter.
