On March 8th, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed an executive order designed to protect gender-affirming health care access. Under this order, state agencies must protect access to gender-affirming care, and are not to comply with investigations in other states where access is banned or limited.

The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009

​

• Named after two victims of hate crimes, one for sexuality and one for race
• Provides funding for state and local jurisdictions to better investigate and prosecute hate crimes
• Created a new federal crime law
• Criminalized causing bodily injury or attempting to on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability of any person
