How to choose which level of rigor to take in each subject area…

  1. What are the student’s academic strengths and weaknesses?
  2. Which subjects do they most enjoy?
  3. Is time management an issue?
  4. Is the student conscientious about deadlines and giving their best effort?
  5. What are the student’s commitment to after school activities (both school and non-school related?)
  6. What is the student’s mental stamina?
  7. How well does your student handle stress?

AB Tech Classes - How to Qualify

For 9th and 10th Grade students - Referral Process

Advice from High School Personnel - weighing pros and cons.

Pros

Cons

Great Opportunity for GPA, rigor, and college credits

Online classes - there is a lot of screen time and self-instruction

Great for mature students who are self motivated and enjoy working online individually

The teacher is not in front of students to assist them - because it is a college class the teacher will not “hand hold” to ensure student success.

Online options allow for flexibility in a student’s schedule since they can be any period of the day

Transitioning from middle school assignments to college is quite a jump

We are offering more AB Tech classes in person - these are the best route to go.

Failing one of these courses will go on both the HS and college transcript for a student potentially impacting Financial Aid in the future.

Important Non-Negotiables

  • Any grade lower than a “C” will NOT receive college credit on a college transcript
  • Any GPA on a college transcript lower than a 2.0 will FORFEIT future financial aid for college
  • College course final grades will be listed on both the HIGH SCHOOL and COLLEGE transcripts.
  • AB Tech grades are NOT made available via PowerSchool until the course is completed. Parents/Guardians and students MUST check the AB Tech Moodle for progress. Parents/Guardians, ask your students to log in and show you progress weekly. This is vital to success.
  • Because your child is taking an AB Tech course with an AB Tech professor, parents/guardians may NOT contact the professor directly. If there are questions and concerns the STUDENT will need to email the professor and copy a parent.
  • Students will not be dropped from a course if it becomes too difficult. After the first 10 days of the semester if students withdraw from the course on the AB Tech side of things, it will be an F on their ACRHS transcript.

Advice from Current Students

“You have 4 classes in a semester. Do not let registering for 8 classes overwhelm you. Remember you will not have them all at one time.”

“Stay organized and remember due dates.”

“Ask for help.”

“Do not rush to take everything. Four years of high school have gone by very fast and I regret not spending more time with clubs and activities with friends.”

“Many scholarships ask about more than GPA. It is important to be well-rounded.”

“Mrs. King will not change you out of an Honors or AP class or even an elective you choose that was an alternate - make sure you are committed to what you are asking for.”
