Describing Changes in Matter
Review
Section 2: Changes in Matter
Put the images into categories and explain what your categories are and why each item is in it.
Section 2: Changes in Matter
Physical change - a change that does not change the identity of the substance (same things as before - just looks different)
Chemical change - change that combines or breaks apart a substance to create a new substance (not the same thing as before)
Every change includes a change in energy (thermal)

Section 2: Changes in Matter
Section 2: Changes in matter
Law of conservation of Mass - matter is neither created or destroyed during a change.
Describing Physical Changes
As a table group, list as many keys to identifying a physical changes as you can. Then list as many example as you can.
Section 3 States of matter
Solids
Liquid
Gas
You, Partner, Class - In three rounds you will take 30 seconds to jot down as many facts as possible
definite shape and definite volume
particles packed tightly together
cannot move (they can vibrate though)
no definite shape and definite volume
particles are packed tightly together
allowed to move freely within container and from place to place.
no definite shape and no definite volume
Particles spread to fill available space
Allowed to move freely and from place to place
Section 4 changes in states of matter
Matter can change state when thermal energy is added or subtracted.
States of Matter: Extended
There are also two other states of matter that do not really occur naturally on Earth

Describing Chemical Changes
As a table group, list as many keys to identifying a chemical changes as you can. Then list as many example as you can.
Chemical Changes
WJ: Chemical Change - A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Wj: Reactant - the substance that undergoes a chemical change
WJ: Product - the new substance/s that is/are formed
Chemical Bonding
Atoms form bonds when they share or transfer electrons. This is how all the different compounds are formed.
Breaking the Chemical Bonds
Breaking chemical bonds requires energy while forming bonds releases energy.
WJ: Exothermic - the reaction releases energy (hotter than before)
WJ: Endothermic - the reaction needs energy (colder than before)
Chemical Formulas
Chemistry has a version of shorthand that we use to explain what is happening in reactions. We call this a Chemical Formula.
