Fall 2024 Assessment

Key Takeaways

Roughly 11% of students currently being placed in FYW 150 are underprepared and a significant minority of students (3.5%) are deemed to be at high risk of failing or struggling in the class.

Recommendations Presented

  • Pre-semester assessment needed with more resources/funding
  • Need consequences for testing non-compliance
  • Additional preparatory resources for students
  • Funding for committee to rethink preparatory writing

CA Policy Updates

Why? From “contractor” to “teacher-scholar-activist”

Toth, Christie, Patrick Sullivan, and Carolyn Calhoon-Dillahunt. "Two-year college teacher-scholar-activism: Reconstructing the disciplinary matrix of writing studies." College Composition & Communication 71.1 (2019): 86-116.

From Traditional Remediation to Accelerated Learning Paths

  • Outlawed ( AB 705 and AB 1705) due to remedial programs reducing graduation rates
  • CA public institutions have transitioned to co-requisites and accelerated learning paths

How might this impact us? We are researching alternative models, reviewing our approach.

Common Course Numbering Templates (AB 1111)

  • Standard templates for first and second semester composition must be used for all community colleges in CA
  • FYW 150 is now classified as CAL-GETC 1A (the first semester of two)

How might this impact us? Possibly, a new ENGL 200 based on the second semester template, classified as CAL-GETC 1B.

Heads-Up: Spring Class Observations

Writing Program has developed a standard form and letter approach to class observations

When are observations required?

  • At the end of all multi-year contracts (five folks will need to be observed this Spring)
  • For new faculty, their first semester

Optional class evaluations

  • I’m willing to do one for anyone who wants it (for their portfolio)
  • You are free to observe each other, and use our official forms
