Hurlock , “Social development means the attaining of maturity in social relationships.

Social development is the process of learning to conform to group standards, mores and traditions and becoming imbued with a sense of oneness, inter-communication, and co-operation.

Social development : Infancy (0-2 years)

  • Self-fish, ego-centred
  • Play materials to playmates
  • Early stage of social behaviour: imitation, timidity, shyness, rivalry and desire for possession

Childhood (2-6 years)

  • Positive and negative social behaviours: negativism, rivalry, quarrelling, teasing, bullying, sympathy, social approval, co-operation.
  • Social awareness
  • Independence from his parents, teachers, elders

  • Gang age-loyalties to gang.

SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE

Social intelligence is the ability to understand and manage men and women and girls, to act wisely in human relations.- Edward Thorndike (1920)

potential to understand other person’s feelings, temperaments, effective social behaviour, ability to empathize, and understanding for nonverbal cues during interaction.

Silvera et al. (2001) 3 components:

  • Social information processing- It shows an individual’s capacity of managing distressed emotional conditions like anxiety, and the potential to manage social situations responsible for it.
  • Social awareness- It reflects the ability of an individual to be aware about other person’s feelings, emotions, and needs. This insight, is then helpful to build a healthy connection with others.
  • Social skills- Theses are ability to deal with social situations effectively. Only those people, who are good at social skills, know when and where to show emotions and feelings (Nwkah and Ahizu, 2009).
