Writing and expressing feelings in a private space with a Social Emotional Learning Journal

First activity:

Many of our JH students have been experiencing high levels of stress due to being separated from friends and

stuck at home. On top of it, some are worried about getting sick ,while

others, whose families are experiencing financial worries or illness are especially vulnerable.

There are ways we can support students socially and emotionally . School — whether it’s done online, in

person, or a mix of the two — can give students a sense of normalcy.

We can help by incorporating SEL activities in our teaching.

Today, I will be sharing with you some activities to cater the needs of students who wish to communicate their thoughts and feelings,

reconnect with peers and regain their sense of belonging to the class.

ART & CRAFT ACTIVITIES

Art can be a powerful way to target Social Emotional skills. Painting, drawing, taking pictures or filming can serve as positive copying strategies to manage stress , increase and support collaboration and develop relationship skills.

Create an emotion wheel -This activity will have you thinking critically about your emotions.

Put together a journal -

Journals don't have to just be based around words. You can make an art journal as well, that lets you visually express your emotions.

Explore puppet therapy -

Puppets aren't just for kids. Make your own and have them act out scenes.

Design a postcard you will never send - Are you still angry or upset with someone in your life? Create a postcard that expresses this, though you don't have to ever send it.

Attach a drawing or message to a balloon - Send away negative emotions or spread positive ones by attaching a note or drawing to a balloon and setting it free.

Draw Your Heart -

Draw your feelings in a heart formation.
