Structure of Chapters

As students begin a chapter, they will see that it is divided into three parts. First, we engage the students. We want to get students excited about what they are about to learn and prepared for what they are about to learn. Students will discuss the essential question collaboratively, then watch the chapter video. This video might spark more inquiry so students are invited to write any additional questions that they might have regarding the topic they are about to learn about. We also introduce key vocabulary during this time. (CLICK) Now, students will begin their investigations or lessons. The number of lessons per chapter At the end of the chapter will vary. (CLICK) At the end of the chapter students will communicate their findings. There is flexibility for how you will choose to have students do this. They can communicate their findings through a performance assessment or through a traditional summative assessment. The performance assessment requires students to create a product that is based on the learning that occurred over the course of the chapter. This assessment will be tied to the essential question. The traditional summative assessment can be administered in print or online. There may be chapters for which you think that the performance assessment might be more appropriate. Similarly, there might be chapters during which youwill choose the traditional summative assessment.

Streamlined Materials

Let’s talk about your students’ sole print resource, the consumable student edition. We understand that social studies is a subject that you generally do not have a lot of time to teach, so to that end we wanted to keep the materials streamlined. For those of you who might have unpacked these consumable student editions or inquiry journals as we call them you might have noticed that they are on the thicker side. We wanted to make managing these resources easier for you. There are some programs that provide students with three to four resources. If you put those resources together, they would be the size of our inquiry journal or larger, but definitely not as easy to manage. You should note that the student edition is referred to as the research journal in the teacher’s edition. They are the same resource. The research journal is a consumable that will be replaced for the life of the adoption. It is also available in Spanish. Additionally, students will also have access to the online student platform for the life of the adoption.

We always begin the chapter with the chapter video. It will be your choice as to whether you will introduce the essential question before the video or perhaps you will have your students discuss the essential question after the video so that students who do not have adequate background can feel comfortable engaging in the conversation. Let’s watch the Chapter video for 4^th grade, chapter 4. Play portion of video

This video goes on to introduce students to Julia Tuttle, the mother of Miami, and tells how she was able to persuade Henry Flagler to bring his steamtrains to the small outpost of Miami, thus helping Miami grow into a city. Students will also be introduced to Dr. John Gorie, who invented the predecessor of our modern air conditioning. Students will also learn about how Greek immigrants came to Tarpon Springs because of the sponge industry. Students are now motivated and interested.

Chapter Overview

Starting at the chapter level in the teacher’s you will see the essential question and explanation of how you’re going to engage students, a list of investigations (lessons) and how students will communicate their findings. You’ll also see information about some additional explorations that students are able complete, if time permits. You’ll see the Florida social studies standards on the page to the right. You will notice that there are some checked standards for this chapter. Those are the ones that will be assessed. The standards with a dot next to them are important,but aren’t going to be assessed. (CLICK) You’ll see some ways in which you can make deeper connections. Not only will you see your English Language Learner standards, but you will see some mathematical thinking and reasoning standards because there will be times where it makes sense for math to be embedded in social studies concepts. (CLICK) Finally, you’ll see some books that we’ve suggested that you might want to have in your classrooms to greatly increase understanding and interest in the topics that students will be learning about. As 4^th grade students are learning all about Industry in Florida, including the aerospace industry, you’ll notice that one of the stories listed is Hidden Figures, which tells the story of women working behind the scenes at NASA.

Lesson Overview

As we transition away from chapters to lessons, we see the lesson question and we also see the objectives and benchmarks for this lesson. Before, we saw the benchmarks for the whole chapter now we’re looking at benchmarks for this specific lesson and remember, anything is that going to be assessed is checked. When it comes to pacing, the full plan is based on 45 minutes of instruction a day. We understand that few of you have that much time. This shouldn’t concern you because (CLICK) The Mix and Match option offers a shorter instructional cycle, but it is only one option for fast tracking instruction. Before our session concludes, I’ll show you our Flexible Planning Guide which is the second option for teaching these lessons in fewer days. (CLICK) Just as you saw ELA connections at the chapter level, you’re going to see more connections here at the lesson level.

Routines

As you teach lessons within Florida Social Studies, many Florida Routines will be mentioned. Here are a few. This one is called What Makes You Say That? It really helps us understand students’ thinking about a topic. (CLICK) This is Give One Get One. It is used in collaborative groups to debrief after reading or even viewing a video. (CLICK) Four Corners is helps us find outw ho strongly agrees, agrees, disagrees, or strongly disagrees with a position, perhaps taken in the lesson that students are learning. (CLICK) 3-2-1 prompts students to tell three things that they’ve learned in the lesson, two questions that they still have and one wow that they have or one thing that they want to look into more deeply. (CLICK) On the previous instructional pages of the 4^th grade lesson on entrepreneurs , the Fishbowl Activity was recommended. In this activity, students practice taking turns being speakers and listeners. The speakers are positions inside of the fishbowl or circle while listeners stand on the outside forming the circle. These routines are all found online.

Lesson Overview

Here are even more opportunities for students to inspect, find evidence and make connections as they are reading the social studies text. Whenever online research opportunities are available, you will see those mentioned in the teacher’s edition. To be clear, these online research opportunities do not have to be used, especially if time is an issue. These are ideal for students who might have additional interest or for those students who are in need of more content. Or it could be that you might want to integrate math into your social studies instruction. In this activity students are considering what happens to money that has been saved in a piggy bank versus money saved in a bank. They’ll come to understand what interest is and see how the money kept in a bank would grow over time far more than the money kept in a piggy bank.
