In Coptic Orthodoxy, the title of "Theologian" has only ever been given to three people: St. John the Theologian (author of the Gospel of John), St. Severus of Antioch, and 4th-century Church Father St. Gregory of Nazianzus.

True theology is defined not merely by reading facts about God, but by communicating with Him. As Evagrius Ponticus noted, "A theologian is one who prays, and one who prays is a theologian". St. Gregory deeply loved a quiet life of prayer and writing, and his eventual fame was largely against his will.

After St. Basil's death, St. Gregory was appointed to Constantinople. At the time, the city was so deeply fractured by Arianism that every major church was controlled by a heretical group; St. Gregory was forced to preach from a tiny chapel.
