• open this Google Form in another tab
• click through the tab for each instrument
• as you go through, read the considerations
• watch video/s for each instrument
• indicate on the Google Form your interest in trying that instrument
• submit Form when finished

Oboe

rent from music store or rent from the school for $50/year

Considerations:

• long finger length
• good hand-eye coordination
• uses a reed approx. $10-15 each
• PLAYS MELODY & HARMONY PARTS
• sound comes out loud and needs refining before it starts to sound nice

Bassoon

rent from the school for $50/year

FREE INTRODUCTORY LESSONS with A BASSOON TEACHER AVAILABLE FOR ANYONE SELECTING THIS INSTRUMENT

Considerations:

​

• long finger length
• larger hand / fingertip size
• thumbs not double jointed
• good hand-eye coordination
• uses a reed approx. $20
• flute/clarinet players transition well to bassoon
• PLAYS LOW BASS PARTS

Bass Clarinet

rent from the school for $50/year

Considerations:

• finger length
• fingertip size
• thumbs not double jointed
• protruding top teeth not ideal
• good hand-eye coordination
• larger instrument - it may be possible to have an instrument at home and one at school
• easy transition for clarinet players
• PLAYS LOW BASS PARTS

Tenor Saxophone

rent from music store or rent from the school for $50/year

Considerations:

• hand size
• strong enough to hold weight of instrument around neck & carry the case
• can make a “flat” chin
• sound preference: Alto - prefer higher sounds, Tenor - prefer medium sounds, Bari - prefer lower sounds
• easy transition for alto sax players
• PLAYS HARMONY OR LOW PARTS

Bari Saxophone

rent from the school for $50/year

Considerations:

• larger/taller body and hand size
• strong enough to hold weight of instrument around neck & carry the case
• can make a “flat” chin
• Sound preference: Alto - prefer higher sounds, Tenor - prefer medium sounds, Bari - prefer lower sounds
• easy transition for alto sax players
• PLAYS LOW BASS PARTS

Trumpet

rent from music store or rent from the school for $50/year

Considerations:

​

• lip size: thin to medium
• front teeth straight & even (playing trumpet can be difficult with braces, but not impossible)
• able to sing simple children’s songs
• can match pitch/note
• prefer higher sounds
• often PLAYS THE MELODY

Trombone

rent from music store or rent from the school for $50/year

• long arm length
• lip size: medium to thick
• able to sing simple children’s songs

Euphonium (Baritone)

rent from music store or rent from the school for $50/year

Considerations:

• lip size: medium to thick
• stature can handle size of instrument
• able to sing simple children’s songs
• can match pitch/note
• prefer lower sounds

Tuba

rent from the school for $50/year (instrument to keep at home & one to use at school - mouthpiece brought from home to school)

Considerations:

​

• lip size: medium to thick
• stature can handle size of instrument
• good distance from nose to top lip
• able to sing common folk song
• prefer lower sounds
• strong parent support
