Lake Matheson

  • Situated 4km’s west of Fox Glacier township
  • Famous for its reflections of New Zealand’s highest mountains, Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman in its tannin saturated water
  • Beautiful easy 2.6 km loop walk in stunning rainforest
  • It belongs to the Fox Glacier!!! Why?

It is Fox Glacier’s kettle lake, a depression in the ground left by retreating ice. Fox Glacier/Te Moeka-o-Tuawe was here approximately 14,000 years ago
