Learn From People

  • College is situated in remote area.

  • Lack of Good Quality Education.

  • Decrease in student count especially female.

  • Poor Infrastructure.

  • Lack of Transport Facility to students especially female.

  • Nearest bus top which connects students to the college is nearly 2 kms away from the college.

  • After 6 pm, the area in which college is situated becomes dark as it has no street lamps.

  • College is situated in the area which is too far to travel for all the students.

We interviewed students, parents, teachers and locals who reside in that areas where the college is situated and where the students reside. The general observations stated are the generalized and summarized observations of the interview we conducted.

Contextual Immersion

  • Transportation facility is also an important factor which decides the education of a child. Be it autos, cycles, mopeds, 4-wheelers or buses, they play an important role in the education of a child as it contributes to the physical and mental health of the child.

  • As our issue is lack of transportation facility of Government PU College Gopanakoppa, similar issue is found in few schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka as well as in Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Odisha.

  • Government schools in Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Orphanages in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts of Karnataka and Orissa have same issues which was decreased their literacy rate.

Analogous Inspiration

  • We do get inspired from the environment we live in. Our Environment has all the solutions for our problems and issues. They say “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam” which means “Whole world is one family”.

  • Lack of Transportation facility in Government PU College, Gopanakoppa is our issue. Luckily we found after a research that same issued prevailed in a school run by Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust, in Alike, Bantwal Taluq, Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka.

  • They found a solution where the alumni of that school donated cycles to the school as well as some donors and villagers of surrounding villages have donated some cycles to the school which was given to the currently-studying students and to even newly admitted students which increased the student count.

THEMES:-SCHOOL

MANAGEMENT

1) Students are not attending regularly.

2) Female count is decreasing rapidly due to lack of transport facility.

3) Lack of quality education decreased the student count.

4) Stereotypical mentality of the people is also a reason for decrease in female count.

5) Ratio of boys to girls is a tension now.

THEMES:-EXPERTS (NWKRTC TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR)

1)College is situated in remote area.

2) Student count is less i.e nearly 55 students.

3) Creating a bus route only for this college results in loss to the department as it results in extra expenditure of petrol and other things.

4)Construction of bus stop near the college may not be fruitful.

SOLUTIONS TO THE ISSUE:~

  • SOLUTION 1:~ Creating bus link to college from nearest bus stop which is sponsored by the school itself by the fees of the students.

  • SOLUTION 2:~ Requesting BEO officer to have discussion with NWKRTC department of Hubli in order to create a bus stop in front of college or nearby(100m-200m) to college so that the students can easily attend the college in time.

  • SOLUTION 3:- Requesting the govt to give free cycles to students of that college or only to the female students so that they can easily attend college everyday instead of travelling through buses.

  • SOLUTION 4:~ Collecting the old-reusable cycles all over Hubli and giving it to the students of that college so that they can attend the class without even waiting for buses in the bus stop.

29 of 49

What are the problems we might face if we want to implement the solutions?

30 of 49

SOLUTION 1:-

Problems we might face:

  • As the problem is faced by the students of Govt PU college and most of the students studying there are from village and poor background and paying the fees for bus and as well as the bus driver could be highly impossible.

  • As it is one of the Govt college the college should also seek the permission of BEO officer regarding this problem and only if they assure this could be possible and hence this solution could not give maximum results out of it.

31 of 49

SOLUTION 2:-

Problems we might face:

  • Requesting BEO officer and asking for the help as to talk with NWKRTC department, would also be of a greater risk as it would be the making a link between the BEO officer and transport department of Hubli.

  • It also involves some of the government procedures into the problem and also requires lot of time and patience.

32 of 49

  • And now the major issue is as we are under the lockdown of corona virus we feel that it is highly impossible to meet BEO officer and request him to discuss about this problem.

  • Even though if BEO officer tries to help us and request NWKRTC for this problem the NWKRTC of Hubli won’t be able to help us as due to lockdown issues the income of NWKRTC has already been reduced and implementing a new plan to their routes could be highly impossible and hence this could be rejected in no time.

33 of 49

SOLUTION 3:-

Problems we might face:

  • Requesting government to provide the cycles to the students of that college amid this corona virus lockdown and expecting help from government at this situation or both could be highly impossible.

  • And getting into the government’s help requires more time and patience.

SOLUTION 4:-

Problems we might face:

  • Roaming all around Hubli to find old-reusable kind of cycles could help us and we feel that there is no any such problem been faced in this solution.

34 of 49

  • Best solution which should be implemented in order to get maximum benefit out of it or which works successfully is “Solution 4”

Benefits out of this solution (Solution 4):-

  • Benefits of getting old cycles is, it does not involve any government procedures.

  • It is easy to implement and find old cycles all over Hubli as we can easily see at least 100 old cycle shop all over Hubli and among them we can find minimum of 25 cycles.

  • This could also be helpful to the environment as we are reusing the old cycle to fix this problem and in turn this solution also helps in other way that is waste management.

  • No wastage of time-Using cycle as the medium of transportation can help the students in attending the college by themselves without waiting for buses in the bus stop.

35 of 49

  • Eco-friendly -Reduces unwanted energy waste. (If the buses are made available then usage of petrol or diesel is the must, and hence if we implement this solution for this issue it could make nil use of any natural resources.)

  • Reduces air pollution. (As the students use cycle for the transportation there is no air pollution been done by the cycles.)

  • There is no special training that needs to be given to the students as cycle is easy to ride by their own.

  • It improves the health of the students. (If the students ride cycle to the college it improves their health indirectly.)

36 of 49

Who are those students to whom the cycles should be provided?

This is the matter to discuss when it comes to distribution of cycle. As to whom we should provide the cycle.

  • We prefer providing cycles to those students where the distance from college to their home is too far (above 1 km-From nearest bus stop towards the other way (away from college)).

  • We also prefer providing cycles especially to girls rather than boys as our first preference is increasing the female student count in the college.

37 of 49

IMPLEMENTATION

38 of 49

Steps to Implement Solution 4:-

Step 1: Visiting old cycle shops all over Hubli

39 of 49

Step 2: Purchasing old, reusable, affordable kind of cycle.

40 of 49

Step 3: Providing bicycle to those students who are in need, especially the females.

41 of 49

Step 4: Girls using bicycle to attend college every day.

42 of 49

Step 5: Returning bicycles to college when they are about to pass out from the college so that their juniors can use those cycles.

43 of 49

How is this solution(solution-4) sustainable?

This solution could be only sustainable and successful if we adopt some of the below given methods:

  • By providing the cycles to only those students whose house is far away from college.

  • By providing cycles preferably to girls rather than boys.

  • If the students return those cycles to college when they are about to pass out finally then this could help their juniors to use those cycles to travel from home to college and finish even their education and finally get maximum benefit of this solution.

Hence “Solution 4” is the best solution for the above issue given and hence increase the number of girls coming to college which is our main goal.

  1. How have your definitions and understanding of "design" and "human-centered design" changed through this course?

= Through this course my definition and understanding of design and human-centered design has been enhanced and has been improvised such that in future, whatever and whenever I design, the design should be such that it's should be for the welfare of human kind and it should satisfy the needs of all the categories.

REFLECTIONS AND TAKEAWAYS

  1. What will you do differently as a result of your experiences in this course?

= Most important difference would be to innovate or design an idea prioritising people. That is to try empathising with people experiencing issue and finalize a solution that truly benefits them by following the norms and rules .

  1. What surprised you most in taking this course?

= We were surprised by huge number of factors affecting and causing a single problem. We learnt to identify most of them and get to the roots of the issue. We also have learnt to innovate and help people by solving their real world problems.

48 of 49

  1. How has your approach to creativity and creative work changed through this course?

= To get some new or create, we need to explore all possible options and then segregate down to most fitting or practical ideas.

  1. What was the most unexpected moment in the process or prototyping or field testing your designs?

= We experienced a situation where the people of the locality wherein we planned to field test our design didn’t allow us to test. They had undertaken a dharna. But after negotiation, we received green signal.

  1. How will you take the lessons from this course into your current work?

=

Structured planning of every task to be implemented be it at individual or group level is the most appreciated learning that would be helpful to our work. Also, most important takeaway would be the People or Human centered approach to products or designs we would work in coming time.
