Lesson Name: Week 5 - Proportion/Ratio Problems

Teacher Notes:

  • Start with some simple number knowledge to warm up:
    • Discuss what 5 x 4 is as repeated addition. 4+4+4+4+4=20
    • Convert multiplication problem into repeated addition.

  • Start with problems like:

    • What do you know? How many pieces is halves?
    • What is the problem asking you to find out?
    • Continue with similar problems

    • What other methods can you think of to solve this problem?

Lesson Name: Week 6 - Proportion/Ratio Problems

Teacher Notes:

  • Start with some simple number knowledge to warm up:
    • Students to split shapes into common fractions ½, ⅓, ¼, ⅕ etc.
    • Discuss how we could break a number into fractions e.g ½ of 20
    • Review that fractions mean shared evenly into the amount of the denominator.

  • Start with problems like:

    • What do you know about 10 and 20?
    • What is the problem asking you to find out?
    • Introduce ratios- comparing two things. Number of kiwifruit:$s
    • Discuss what the rule is to make 10 into 20. Apply this rule to 32.
    • Continue with similar problems

    • What other methods can you think of to solve this problem?

Miss Kyee’s Plan:

  • Introduce Create a Word Problem Task
    • Co-construct a word problem with the group based on the equation.
    • Write the word problem in the notes part of the presentation.
    • Model how to solve the problem in the notes.
    • Students make a copy of doc and solve the problems in the notes section.

  • Reflect: Where they are working on the Steps to Success and write the date at the bottom.

This lesson was pitched too high and so Shwe took follow up lessons with shapes. She had the students cut shapes into fractions and discussed the denominator and numerator.

Lesson Name: Week 10/11 - Mult/Div Problems

Teacher Notes:

  • Each session begins with a basic facts test based on the student's needs and are tracked on our Maths Masters presentation.
  • Start with some simple division knowledge to warm up:
    • 12 ÷ 2 = ▢ is the same as ▢ x 2 = 12, 60 divided into 6 groups is ▢, etc.
    • Show students what times tables and division look like in picture form.

  • Start with problems like:

    • What do you know?
    • Can you draw what this is asking you to do?
    • What times table problem could you associate with this?
    • What is the problem asking you to find out?
    • Continue with similar problems
    • What other methods can you think of to solve this problem?

Lesson Name: Week 10/11 - Creating Word Problems

Teacher Notes:

  • Review The Steps to success
    • Have students reflect where they are currently working and what their Next Step is.

  • Introduce Create a Word Problem Task
    • Co-construct a word problem with the group based on the problem.
    • Students make a copy of doc and make up their own word problem.
    • Students solve the problem showing how to do so.
    • Students share their work with a partner and solve their partner's problem.

  • Reflect: Where are you working on the Steps to Success?
    • Students paste their first link onto the Steps to Success and highlight their Next Step.
