The Case of New Orleans
Hurricane Katrina
Levee
Levees and floodwalls are typically built parallel to a waterway, most often a river, to reduce the risk of flooding on the landward side.
New Orleans Levee Restoration Project
Climate change is causing the oceans to warm, causing hurricanes to become more severe and increased sea level rise.
Sea Level Rise is causing higher storm surges.
Storm Surge
A storm surge is a sudden rise of water hitting areas close to the coast. Storm surges are usually created by hurricanes. The surge happens because a storm has fast winds and low atmospheric pressure. Water is pushed on shore, and the water level rises.
