If you create the work, you own it.
The goal of copyright is to protect creators from having their work displayed, stolen, copied or reproduced without their permission.
Can I take a copyrighted image and modify it?
NO!

What do I do if I can’t find the perfect free image?
You are creating your design for educational purposes. Technically you are not infringing on copyright law if you are not making money from it.
However, you may not be able to submit your work into contests or be able to make money from selling your work.
