ACTIVITY 1 - LAUNCH

Play the podcast video to help students understand the purpose of public history. Students can follow along with the transcript and answer questions on page 1. Then, introduce the expectations and instructions for the Comparative Museum Exhibit Assessment. The Museum will be based on two historical figures from the unit.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Remind students of this unit’s essential question
  2. Hand out student worksheet
  3. Play video of interview with Dr. Sean Jacobson
  4. Informally discuss student answers
  5. Provide instructions for the assessment

ACTIVITY 2 - PRACTICE

Place students into groups of 2-3 and direct students to page 2 of the worksheet. It is suggested to have students complete the exhibit digitally, but by paper is an option as well. Ensure students have access to digital and/or print resources. Walk students through pages 2-6 of the student worksheet to ensure comprehension of task.

ACTIVITY 3 - EXHIBIT

Students will “visit” the museum exhibit of two other groups. Students will reflect on the museum exhibits using page 7 of the student worksheet. Organize the classroom so students can “visit” the other classmates exhibits. This can be through setting up laptops around the room or creating a digital way for students to access all the museums.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Organize the museums exhibits around the classroom on student laptops OR create a digital way to share all the museums so students can use their own laptops
  2. Monitor work progress and provide support as needed

STUDENT ACTIONS

  • Visit two digital museums
  • Fill out the reflection questions for both museums

Students will conclude the unit by completing the Unit 3 Inquiry Journal - Essential Question (page 9).
