Stories from a Hazel Therapist

A student shared that before therapy he did not know how to express his feelings and was lost in a sea of doubt and mystery. We worked with the student on understanding his feelings, and what he can and cannot control. We focused a lot on how he treats his anger and how to calm himself down. He also was struggling socially, having a hard time talking with with other students and making and keeping friends.

We worked through tools that he can use to help manage his emotions and feelings, as well as conversation and social skills. He was eager and did a wonderful job in our sessions, and has demonstrated how and when to use these skills. And, best of all, he shared that he considered me a new friend, and I felt the same way!

The Hazel therapist checked in with parent (mom) towards the end of the session today. Mom thanked me for the patience and the ability to engage her student over the course of sessions. Mom stated that the student has experienced anxiety and had not been able to open up to her parents about it. Mom stated that as a result of our sessions the student has opened up more than she ever has and is now having conversations with mom and dad about her anxiety.

What are Community Schools?

The Community School Model is a national strategy where schools serve as the hub of the community providing both academic and social-emotional support for students and their families.  As defined by the Coalition of Community Schools, “A Community School is a public school - the hub of its neighborhood, uniting families, educators and community partners to provide all students with top-quality academics, enrichment, health and social services, and opportunities to succeed in school and in life.”

The goal of Community Schools is to help ensure students and their families are resilient, successful, ready to learn and are prepared to be involved in their community. Prince George’s County Public Schools currently has 129 Community Schools incorporating the Community School strategy
