Warm Welcome
Making a Kelso Connection
When approaching a student about their grades, remember that they are nervous, often think that they are in trouble, and are sometimes just looking for someone that cares enough to ask if they are okay.
Find a moment, during class, in the hall before or after class.
Be positive, look for reasons, not blame.
Be yourself!
I noticed that you are not doing well in one of your classes. Can we take a minute to talk about it?
Listen, be present, hold no judgement.
Ask probing questions like
Tell me what is going on?
What is getting in the way of you doing well in that class?
Let’s make a plan to get you back on track.
Offer to help the student practice what they might say to their teacher.
Now that you have a plan, I want you to check back in with me in a couple of days.
Explain how to use the “Kelso Connection” paper or other tool to make their plan real.
