Professional Development is an integral component of how our educators at Mineola stay current and iterate their instructional practice.

About 6 years ago, we developed our Stackables site on the kidOYO platform. In the Stackables platform, all of our educators create a digital portfolio in which they can collect digital badges. This type of celebration of learning mirrors our learners culture of earning badges. Over the years, our Stackables community has continued to strengthen and cultivate a robust professional development internal site in which Mineola educators engage in choice PD at their own space and time. One type of option for our staff to explore on the Stackables site are SNAXs (Short New Application of e-Xpertise).

This year, we brainstormed the concept of learners creating SNAXs for their fellow learners focused on various tech tools that help in the creation process. Dr. Smith worked with some 7th grade learners over the summer to create our new learner site - the Mineola Student Stackables community.

This site empowers our learners to take ownership of their learning based on their interests.

Another important concept that both of these sites allow us to cultivate and sustain in our learners are ownership of learning and the shift of focus for our classroom teachers from master of content to facilitator of life-long learner, since learners are able to explore and learn a particular tech tool from one of their peers.

To compliment our PD offerings during the school day, we have used our PLC structure and Model Schools PD to explore the SeeSaw and Khan Academy software platforms. We also have BoomLearning PD planned for in the Spring.

An exciting new pilot with our longtime tech partner

kidOYO AI Description

OYOclass is expanding to offer Teacher-Led AI Classrooms where students will have access to Coding Editors with AI debugging and code-explainers as well as Teacher Created DATs. A DAT, which can also be referred to as an AI agent, is a type of AI interface that can be sculpted to perform specific learning objectives such as: Offering Rubric Based Feedback tools where students can improve their writing skills with constant on-demand feedback, Aiding teachers in creating diverse meaningful classroom lesson plans, Fully translating text into students' native languages...

This initiative aims to democratize access to all students, in a safe, curated space where students and teachers will engage AI together.

The kidOYO pilot is spanning over 8 different districts on Long Island. Districts have identified their pilot group of teachers and those teachers will train together in set cohorts. The pilot is designed not only to provide advanced resources to teachers but also to define best practices in this rapidly emerging field of AI.

By partnering with kidOYO, we are able to create a walled garden AI community in which we are able to have a safe platform for our learners to explore. This platform will allow us to monitor not only learner interactions with the AI prompt generator but it will help us to ensure that the generated responses are appropriate and applicable to our educational setting.
