Welcome to Greenford High School

Running of the school this year

  • Hoping to operate as normal. 8:30am start.

  • All students to attend every day. No self isolation required for contacts of Covid cases.

  • Please help us keep Covid out of the school by testing twice a week & not sending your child in with symptoms.

  • Staff absence due to sickness may impact on us opening the school.

Show My Homework

Show My Homework (SMHW)

What is it?

  • Show My Homework (SMHW) is an online platform used to set and monitor homework and help independent learning;
  • It is run by Satchel One, the umbrella company;
  • Staff will set homework on SMHW and students can check what they need to do on their phones, using an app downloaded to their phones - most staff and students did this towards the end of last year;
  • Parents and carers can also check, using the same app - this will make homework a lot clearer for everyone.
  • This year we will be using SMHW and planners while we adapt to the new system. We will also be using Google Classroom.

Show My Homework (SMHW)

What do I do now?

  • Families need to sign up to SMHW - you will be emailed details about this tomorrow;
  • You will receive your family’s login details (more than 1 person can sign up for your child) and instructions;
  • Sign up, but let us know if there are any issues;
  • You will then get notifications when teachers set your child or children and will be able to check what the homework is on your phone.

Key areas to watch out for

Sexting - it is a crime to possess, take, make, distribute or show anyone an indecent image or abuse image of a child. A child is anyone under the age of 18.

Online safety - please be aware of what your child is doing online. Talk to them about device usage.

Peer on peer abuse and sexual harassment - this can occur between children of any age, and will not be tolerated. It includes comments of a sexual nature, sexual jokes and physical behaviours.

How to help your child make progress

Reading

Improving vocabulary is one of the most important ways to help students make progress.

  • Encourage your child to read everyday (30 minutes) for pleasure.
  • Read together - article, novel, etc…
  • Discuss what you are reading and look up vocabulary - ask them questions: what did you learn, how did it make you feel, what does __________ word mean?
  • Read additional material for range of subjects.

Homework

A student’s awareness of how to study had a strong correlation with their achievement. 

  • Help them create a routine - when and where?

Can you create a designated space for homework?

  • Check SMHW regularly to see when homework is due - and check that it is their best effort (handwriting/presentation).

  • Help your child access any online resources.

  • Discuss homework with your child - can they explain what they have done?

Attitude to Learning

The greatest impact on your child’s learning will be in the classroom. Every lesson matters. For each lesson to count...

  • Get a good night’s sleep (9 hours).
  • Eat Breakfast each morning.
  • Be organised: check Google Classroom/SMHW so that all work is completed ahead of time and bags are ready the night before.
  • Ask questions - encourage your child to ask their teachers questions if they are unsure.

  • We expect the highest standards of behaviour at Greenford High School;

  • We expect to see those high standards in the classroom, around the school site, and in our community;

  • GHS Rules: Ready – Respectful – Safe;

  • In the classroom, we follow a Behaviour For Learning Pathway;

  • If your child has B on their Interim it will indicate that their behaviour in that lesson is a concern.

Caution

  • Verbal Warning is given.
  • First time misbehaviour recorded.
  • Teacher records name of student.

 

Yellow card

  • Final warning given.
  • Second time misbehaviour is recorded.
  • Teacher records name of student
  • 15 minute detention followed by a corrective conversation with teacher.

 

Red card

  • Final time misbehaviour is recorded.
  • Student will be sent to another class within department.
  • 30 minute department detention on a night selected by the department followed by a corrective conversation with teacher.
  • Behaviour incident recorded on student’s file.

Red Lines

Breach of these will result in an instant patrol to remove the student:

  • Fighting;
  • Swearing at staff;
  • Dangerous behaviour that puts students or staff at risk;
  • Damage to school property.
  • Leaving the lesson without permission.
  • Misbehaviour in the red card room.

Patrol

  • If your child has been patrolled from a lesson it means that their behaviour is no longer welcome within the classroom.

  • A senior member of staff will collect the pupil from the classroom and contact you regarding the incident.

  • This is serious – a one hour detention on that day will be issued. A corrective conversation will take place during this time.
  • Failure to attend a patrol detention will result in an internal exclusion.

How Can You Support Our Behaviour Policy?

  • Reinforce our expectations with your son/daughter at home.

  • Check their planner weekly – Achievement Points and Behaviour Points.

  • Support the school and the behaviour policy when staff call home.

  • Keep us informed of any information that may impact on your son/daughter’s behaviour in school so we can support.
