ATHLETIC CONTRACT and BROCK ATHLETIC PACKAGE

Athletic Contract

  • Given out at the start of EACH season by the coach.
  • Prior to the athlete’s first game, the Student Athlete Code of Conduct, Parent Code of Conduct and Athlete Medical Data Record forms must be signed, completed, and submitted. Athletes must be in “Good Standing” in order to participate.

  • NOTE: These forms needs to be completed each school year prior to participation. These forms are kept with the school’s Athletic Director for that school year.

  • The actions of a student-athlete are a reflection of themselves, their team, their school and their community. A student’s involvement in school sport provides opportunities and experiences that are important to the development of a well-rounded student. Student-athletes must remember that their participation in school sport is a privilege, not a right.

  • Student-athletes shall:

  • 1.0 Treat Everyone with Respect
  • 2.0 Exercise Self Control at all Times
  • 3.0 Abide by School District NO 73. Policy 606.2 “Alcohol and Other Drugs - Student Athletes.”

Drug and Alcohol Policy

Procedures 1. Students are expected to be free of alcohol and other drugs. Students found to be using, under the influence and/or in possession of alcohol or other drugs or exhibiting physical characteristics that indicate recent use will be subject to the following consequences:

1.1. First Offence

  • 1.1.1. For incidental or minor involvement, the student could be suspended for up to five (5) school days. For cases other than those of minor or incidental involvement, the principal or vice-principal will suspend the student for a period of time determined by the principal or vice-principal in consultation with the Director of Instruction – Secondary Education and Learning Services.
  • 1.1.2. The principal or vice-principal, in consultation with the Director of Instruction – Secondary Education and Learning Services, may recommend counselling through school or appropriate community services. The suspension may be reduced by the Kamloops-Thompson School District No. 73 August 2019 Administrative Procedures Manual principal or vice-principal after consideration of the reports provided as a result of the counselling.

1.2. Subsequent Offence

  • 1.2.1. In addition to any consequences which may be imposed pursuant to the First Offence, as set out above, the principal or vice-principal will suspend the student and refer the student to the Director of Instruction – Secondary Education and Learning Services for a disciplinary hearing in accordance with Administrative Procedure 355 – Student Suspensions.

Drug Policy 606.2

REGULATIONS

1. The suspensions set out in this policy are in addition to any discipline which may be imposed pursuant to Policy 606.1. For the purposes of this policy, an “Athlete” is a student who is participating in a school sport and who has signed a Student Athlete's Code of Conduct. For the purposes of this policy, ‘participation’ includes tryouts, exhibition play, season of play and playoffs.

 

2. Any Athlete who violates Policy 606.1 at any athletic or non-athletic event, under the jurisdiction of the District, or under the jurisdiction of any other school district, can be be suspended from participation in the athletic program for up to one calendar year from the date of violation.

Alcohol and other Drugs Policy 606.2

3. Any Athlete who violates Policy 606.1 will be referred to the Athletic Council Discipline Committee, chaired by the Assistant Superintendent responsible for Secondary Athletics. The Committee will be comprised of the Assistant Superintendent responsible for Secondary Athletics, one (1) member of the Secondary Athletic Council, and the School Principal. The Committee will review the facts and determine the length of suspension from participating in extra-curricular athletic programs.

a) The length of the suspension shall reflect the principles of progressive discipline and consider factors such as the seriousness of the violation, the frequency of violations, and the student’s willingness to participate in drug and alcohol counselling services.

b) A decision of the Assistant Superintendent’s Athletic Council Discipline Committee to suspend an Athlete under Policy 606.2 may be appealed to the Superintendent who will review the matter and assign a final decision.

4. Before the Athlete can be reinstated, the Athlete and parent or guardian must have a formal meeting with the Athletic Director and the Principal to discuss further participation in school athletics.

5. Nothing herein is to be interpreted so as to prevent the Athlete from attendance at regular physical education classes during school time.

SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT

Treat everyone with respect

  • cheer in a positive manner for all competitors
  • respect the decisions of officials - the Officials are ALWAYS right, even when they’re wrong
  • not interfere with the play or competitions
  • be courteous and respectful to other spectators, all competitors, coaches, event organizers, and officials.

Exercise self-control at all times

  • respect the rules and regulations of the facility
  • refrain from the use of foul or profane language
  • refrain from the use of physical force of any kind.

COMMUNICATING Concerns

  • Communicating with coaches is welcomed however the timing is critical. Before, during or right after a game is not be the optimal time to have a discussion.
  • Talk to your child FIRST.
  • Emails are often written in anger and/or misunderstood.
  • If you are upset or frustrated, please delay the discussion a day and then set up a meeting to see the coach.

Financial Assistance

Brocklehurst Secondary School believes that all students should have the opportunity to participate in athletics regardless of financial circumstances. Families experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to contact the school's Athletic Director or Administration team. All requests for financial assistance will be handled confidentially, and support may be available to help offset athletic fees, travel costs, or other participation expenses.

Intent of the Safety Guidelines

  • The primary responsibility for the care and safety of athletes rests with the School District and its employees.
  • An important aspect in this role is recognizing the element of risk inherent in all physical activity and take action accordingly.
  • It is important to identify all foreseeable risks and develop procedures that help minimize preventable accidents and injuries.

GENERIC ISSUES

  • The Principal of each school is responsible for the extracurricular athletic program

  • All new coaches must go through an approval process (concussion awareness training, criminal record check)

  • Prior to the athlete’s first game (completed and signed), Student Athlete Code of Conduct, Parent Code of

Conduct, and Athlete Medical Data Record forms must be submitted.

  • Prior to the start of each season of play, Parents must understand and be aware of the risks inherent in specific sport participation.

RISK MANAGEMENT

(for Coach)�

The following elements of risk must be taken into consideration by the teacher/coach:

  • The competition is age-appropriate for the athletes’ physical/mental abilities

  • The coach/supervisor has the knowledge/experience and certification (where applicable) to coach/supervise the activity safely (including concussion training).

  • Consideration must be given to environmental factors (e.g. Site conditions, weather conditions)
