CHAPTER 1: RECALLING THE PAST

  • Chapter 1 starts where Numbers left off, East of the Jordan river.
  • Moses recalls chapter 18 of Exodus and how he chose judges to help him with his responsibilities.
  • Moses recalls chapter 13-14 of Numbers when the Israelites explored Canaan and then refused to enter.
  • Moses recalls chapter 14 and 20 of Numbers when the Lord tells Moses he won’t enter the promised land, and that only Joshua and Caleb will enter out of the generation that left Egypt.

CHAPTER 2: STILL RECALLING

  • Moses recalls wandering through the desert, passing through his relatives Esau and Lot’s land.
  • He then recalls defeating Sihon King of Heshbon in battle as occurred in Chapter 21 of the Book of Numbers.

CHAPTER 3: STILL RECALLING

  • Moses recalls defeating Og King of Bashan as occurred Chapter 21 of the book of Numbers.
  • Moses recalled dividing the land that was conquered as occurred in Chapter 26 and 31 in the Book of Numbers.
  • Moses recalled being forbidden to enter the promised land, and having Joshua chosen as successor as occurred in Chapter 27 of the Book of Numbers.

CHAPTER 4: LAWS

  • Moses reminds the Israelites of the Law.
  • Moses forbids them from worshipping any Idolatry.
  • Moses reminds them of the miracles God has performed and that his is all mighty.
  • Moses established three cities as places of refugee for individuals who murdered somebody unintentionally.

CHAPTER 5: TEN COMMANDMENTS

  • Moses reminds the Israelites of the ten commandments given to them at Mt. Sinai in Chapter 20 of the Book of Exodus.

CHAPTER 6: LOVE GOD AND OBEY LAW

  • Moses reminds them to love God, fear God and obey his laws.

CHAPTER 7: DRIVE OUT NATIONS

  • Moses instructs the Israelites to make sure when they enter Canaan to show the local no mercy, drive them out, don’t marry them, destroy their idols, because if you don’t they will lead you astray.

CHAPTER 8: MOSES WARNS OF PRIDE

  • Moses warns people to not forget the Lord when they get into the promised land, and warns they will become proud once they get wealthy.

CHAPTER 9: ISRAEL NOT RIGHTEOUS

  • Moses informs the Israelites that God will fight for them against the nations that live in Israel, but it is not because of Israel’s righteousness but because of the wickedness of their enemies.
  • Moses then reminds them of all their sins when they were in the desert.

CHAPTER 10: FEAR GOD

  • Moses recalls the second set of tablets he chiseled, as well as the ark they made. He also recalls their travels through the desert and how the Lord made the Levites the priesthood.
  • Then Moses warns the Israelites to fear the Lord.

CHAPTER 11: OBEY THE LORD

  • Moses reminds the Israelites that if they obey the Lord he will send down rain, but if they disobey the Lord he will cause a famine..
  • Moses tells the Israelites that their land will stretch from the Sinai desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates river to the Mediterranean sea.

CHAPTER 12: THE ONE PLACE OF WORSHIP

  • Moses instructs the Israelites that the Lord will choose one place of worship for them once they enter the promised land.
  • When the Lord chooses this location you should only worship there.
  • Destroy all the local temples and do not inquire about their Gods.

CHAPTER 13: WORSHIPPING OTHER GODS

  • Moses instructs the Israelites that anybody who is worshipping other gods or entices you to worship other gods must be put to death.

CHAPTER 14: CLEAN FOOD AND TITHES

  • Moses instructs the Israelites on which food is clean and unclean.
  • Moses instructs the Israelites on payment of tithes.

CHAPTER 15: JUBILEE YEAR

  • Moses reminds the Israelites to remember that every 7th year is the Jubilee year where you cancel debts, help the poor, and free servants
  • Moses instructs them the first born male of your flocks is for ceremonial meals.

  • Moses instructs the Israelites of the festivals they are supposed to observe.
  • Moses instructs the Israelites to appoint judges.
  • Moses reminds them to not set up any false idols.

  • Moses instructs the Israelites not to worship other gods.
  • Moses instructs them to take their difficult cases to the place the Lord designates for worship, and obey what the judges command.
  • Moses instructs them to choose a King once they enter the promised land.

CHAPTER 18: MORE COMMANDS

  • Moses reminds the Israelites that the Levites are the priesthood.
  • Moses warns the Israelites not practice any witchcraft.
  • Moses informs them that a prophet will be raised from among them.

  • Moses sets up cities of refuge for Israelites who have committed murder by accident.

CHAPTER 20: GOING TO WAR

  • Moses instructs the Israelites to not be afraid to go to war with other nations and that the Lord will fight for them.
  • Moses instructs if the nations you are battling except an offering of peace they become your servants, but if they do not destroy them and leave nothing that breathes.

  • Moses establishes dealing with unsolved murders, marrying captive women, the rights of the firstborn, dealing with a rebellious son, etc.

  • Moses discusses a variety of laws, mainly dealing with sex crime.

  • Moses discusses laws dealing with exclusion from the the assembly of the Lord, uncleanness of the camp, economic laws, etc.

  • Moses discusses laws regarding marriage and economics.

  • Moses reminds them the Israelites to pay their tithes every third year and to offer their firstfruits.

  • Moses instructs the Israelites to build an altar on Mt. Ebal.

  • Moses reminds the Israelites they will be blessed for being obedient, and cursed for being disobedient.

  • Moses informs the Israelites they must choose life or death, whether they want to be blessed or cursed.

  • Moses reports to the Israelites that he is dying and will not be able to enter the promised land because that is what the Lord ordered.
  • Moses commissions Joshua to be his successor.
  • Moses writes down the law and gives it to the Israelites.
  • Moses writes a song.

CHAPTER 32: MOSES’S SONG

  • Moses recites the song he just wrote.
  • The Lord tells Moses to climb Mt. Neob in Moab across from Jericho and observe the promised land.

  • Moses blesses the tribes.

CHAPTER 34: MOSES DIES

  • Moses climbs Mt. Neob and observes the promised land, then he dies at the age of 120.
