From Rebellion to Revolution

  • 1775: First shots between the British and the American colonists
    • Most Americans at this time did not support independence
    • Were still hoping for a peaceful resolution with the British
  • 1776: Colonial leaders feel it is time to break away from British rule completely

Second Continental Congress

  • Governing/law-making body for the colonies, agreed to declare independence since efforts to avoid separation were not working
  • Chose Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration
    • Was adopted July 4, 1776
    • From here forward, colonies consider themselves independent

Main Ideas in the Declaration

  • Based on beliefs of John Locke
    • People have unalienable rights (government cannot take away)
    • Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
    • If the government disregards these rights, the people have the right to abolish it and form a new one that will protect those rights
  • Also states that “all men are created equal”

Grievances Against the King

  • Also includes a list of complaints against the tyrannical King of England
  • Reaction to these complaints can be found in our Constitution
    • Cannot impose taxes without consent
    • Cannot quarter troops in homes during times of peace
    • If arrested, must be provided a trial by jury
